ok cat lovers... Cat Question...

Well, trying to be a good cat owner, I let our cat outside today on the front porch to sit and he wondered in the flowers and I noticed later that he must have gotten stung by a bee. Part of his right side of his face is swollen. He just ate his snack just like it is not bothering him but I think that is what happened. He was just playing with one of his toys, he seems happy and fine but his face is swollen. Is this something I need to be worried about. Has this happened to anyone else?

About 9 years ago, one of my cats caught a wasp in my kitchen window and he ate it, but not before the wasp stung his gums... ouch! I didn't do anything, the cat seemed fine. Is the stinger still in the cat's face? I would look to see and get it out if it is.

The stinger would have been absorbed by the body if the cat didn't manage to remove him.

I would suggest just keeping an eye on him. It does sound like he might have been stung, that has happened to my cats before. The swelling should go down by tomorrow...

I agree with everyone else ... just keep an eye on him. I think the swelling will go down on it's own. Of course, if it doesn't, and you feel like you NEED to get him to a vet, it will be Sunday and you'll be paying BIG bucks for an emergency (at least you would around here!). But I'm kind of used to that! Whenever there seems to be something seriously wrong with one of my animals, it's always on a weekend/holiday and we have to call the vet at home and pay extra!

If it is in fact a bee sting it's not likely to get any worse at this point. As long as he's not having any trouble breathing, eating or drinking, there's not too much to worry about. The only exception is that he may scratch at it and then it could become infected, that's unlikely though. If tomorrow it hasn't improved at all, then I would start to consider something other than a sting and make an appointment for him Monday. Unless of course he suddenly gets worse, then take him in right away.

I'd check to make sure the stinger isn't still there then just keep an eye on him. As long as he's eating, drinking and using the cat box he should be just fine.

We've had pets get stung over the years, usually in the paw because they step on a bee/wasp. If he starts acting like it's really itchy you can mix some baking soda with water to form a paste and put on it. That will help with the itch and won't hurt the cat if he licks it off.

I'd guess if he hasn't had a reaction by now that he probably isn't going to. Just keep an eye on him and maybe offer a few extra goodies and lovies.....
