My mom was exposed to the H1N1 flu at the rehab center and I was exposed too

I am very appreciative of the phone call I just received from the Rehab and Health Center my mother is in, but I am also not very happy about what I was told.

It seems one of their Therapists who does the rehab therapy has been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu virus, she had direct contact with my mother on Friday and several times last week. She tested positive today for the H1N1 through the one test but still have to get a final from the CDC on it.

I know exactly which girl this is and it aggravates me I asked her the other day if she wasn't feeling well or if it was allergies because she was sniffing and coughing, she said allergies I guess. You work in a health care facility, you should know better than to come to work sick. Especially since you are workin with fragile people. As you enter this facility there are several signs that say if you have a fever, cough, runny nose or diarrhea please do not visit patients. I just don't know why they even allowed her to work. I was also exposed to her several times last week as I went to therapy with Mom everyday but Friday because I had a Dr's appt.

Now she is having her temp taken every 4 hrs, among other things they are doing and I am not allowed to visit her for at least 72 hours if not more because of the exposure and because of the fact I have a compromised immune system.

Mom enjoys my visits especially since I work with her on getting out and about, I have worked more with her on getting out of bed, and using her walker than they do during therapy and she loves how I follow behind her with the wheelchair for her to sit in when she gets too tired to continue, we have gotten to about 100 feet before she poops out. I am upset because I made her several appointments this week and was going to take her out of the facility so now I have to cancel them and she would have loved the hairdressers appt. and the lunch date with several of the neighbors.

I guess this being home will allow me to pack up some more boxes of mom's stuff to prepare for our move to our brand new home in August.

I am very bummed out and upset but thankful they were honest and did not hide this from me, although it would have been nice if they would have called earlier rather than at almost 11 pm my heart was pounding when I answered the phone.

The health care provider should have known better to come in not feeling well. I am glad they are monitoring your mom. Did they advise that you take the tamiflu? Here in Georgia several of boy-scouts came down with it. I read the parents and siblings were taking tamiflu as a precaution.
Glad to hear she has been up and moving a little bit. Sounds like she is lucky to have you there to help with her recovery!

Wow that would make me mad too. It's unfortunate that lots of people go to work sick but it's almost negligence to be sick working there. I suppose she could have thought it was allergies, sometimes you just never know, but I doubt it. The influenza usually hits hard and fast.

Not necessary true. Each type affects people differently. I've gone to work just feeling a little run down or tired, thinking I just didn't get enough sleep. I'd have a fever or at least definitely more symptoms by mid or end of the work day. It was probably coming on that morning, but I didn't feel like absolute crap until later.

I was advised to call my Primary care Doctor and I have an appointment tomorrow already so I will ask about the Tamiflu just to be safe.

I am glad she is up and moving around I have also gotten her to get out of the room and socialize, they do things everyday there and she wasnt doing anything until the last week. Since it is summer there are a lot of volunteers around who when I am not there take her to bingo even though she doesn't play she watches, and there was a church there yesterday worshiping and singing which is where i found her when she wasn't in her room and her new roommate is non-verbal so could not tell me where she was.

I am lucky to have her, I could have been given to anyone or grown up in a Foster Home, but she and Dad did not hesitate to help their niece out and adopt me and raise me and take care of me, its my turn now and I would not have it any other way.

I am truly blessed to have everything come together so quickly to get the whole family down here, my home in Va is sold (within a week !) and the new one to move into for less than I was paying in VA in lot rent and mortgage and its 3x the size of the old one and the land is mine.

Some people think its allergies and yes the flu can hit hard and fast for some but others it starts out innocent enough I guess.

I agree its almost negligence to work there knowing that you are with people who are already very fragile and come in sniffing, sneezing and coughing. I like the guy who does her therapy some days he wears a mask when his allergies kick in just in case its something more.

That's what I was thinking too. My oldest Daughter worked for a nursing home up till 5 months ago and she was told the very same thing. Come in or find another job. She was so sick she had no other choice but to go to work. After an hr or so of being there they FINALLY let her go back home. She was sick sick. She even told the sup over the phone she had a fever and was coughing, sniffing everything a flu or cold has and they said come in or you're fired.
She is now working for the hospital ( finally got the results from her nursing test back from when she as working for the nursing home so she was able to quit there and move on to the hospital ) But the floor she worked on was the Pre op floor and same thing.. You come in no matter what and we'll let you know if you are too sick to work. She's now in the ER department and they are a different story you are NOT allowed to come in to work sick , if you are running 1 degree of fever stay home and call in. Weird how they require you to come to work when you are working with the aging and people thats having major surgery, but yet in the ER where most people go when they are REALLY sick you are not allowed to get around them. Strange to me.

Most of the nursing homes in our area can't find enough CNAs. I am always seeing ads in the paper, they can't seem to keep workers. Therapists might be another story, as I am sure their pay is much higher and working hours may be less. I am sorry to hear that your family is having to go thru this, hopefully....all will be okay!

True could be the bosses, there is a lot of burn out in rehab/nursing homes among Nurses,CNA's and the like so they could be short staffed. Also the economy could be another factor maybe she needs the money and has no sick leave, I don't know.

I sure did miss Mom yesterday and she missed me, she must have called me half a dozen times, we got her a cell phone to use while she is there and she is fascinated by it, just like she is fascinated by all the cable channels they get there and she now has asked for me to get cable installed in the house, she has minimal basic service now as part of a special phone service deal, I am so hoping we can get FIOS at the new house, it looks like they are just finishing up installation of it in that area. Amazing what can thrill a 86 yr old !

Just wanted to say congratulations to your daughter she has a bright future ahead of her.

You're right really strange about the different rules in each department.

Thank you Tammy. I said it earlier there is a lot of burnout in the field, I was surprised even at the difference from state to state what a CNA can and cant do sure was eye-opening to me at how much more they are allowed to do in VA than in FL and how little training they have in FL compared to what is required in VA.
