We are lucky to have a house: gas leak

We went out yesterday to buy a new tree for our front yard before my family came over for Father's Day. We were gone 1.5 hours. We came home to a house FULL of gas! We had a gas leak while we were gone. The main floor smelled a little weird but I thought it was just some food I had cooked earlier. DH and my noses were all plugged up (allergies). Then DH went into our basement and about passed out! We came upstairs, turned off our gas and then opened everything up. We called a gas technician who has done work for us before and he came over. He said we were lucky. If we had been gone a couple more hours, our house most likely would have exploded and took a couple more on the block out It turns out that a brass fitting cracked. He's never seen it happen but has heard it can. He is contacting the manufacturer. We are just lucky this happened yesterday and not in a couple weeks when we are gone for a week out of state. We wouldn't have had a house to come back to. Now we know to turn off our gas and water when we leave for more than a day (we usually turn off the water). It's just so freaky. What if's are clouding my head.

Just glad to be safe and have my home

Oh my gosh that has to be so nerve wracking!

I'm glad you and your family and your house are all okay. 'What if's" would be plaguging me, too!

I never thought of turning off gas and water when leaving. I'm certainly going to mention it to my husband now.

**hugs**

there have been a few house explosions in New England in the past few months...and you are right......your house as well as a few others on the street would have been destroyed.

I don't have gas for anything in the house....and nothing has made me think I made the wrong decision

No, we didn't have to call the gas company because we found the problem. It was a faulty brass fitting that cracked and then the gas leaked out. We were able to shut off the gas that went to that fitting (to keep gas on in the rest of the house) and we are having it replaced today.

Very glad that everything is ok.

This happened to my mom about 6 yrs back. She rented part of a duplex. New neighbors in the other 1/2 had a propane tank delivered while they were not home. The guy that delivered it left it turned on and gas leaked into the house for quite some time. The house exploded into a ball of fire everywhere. My grandmother and 4 younger siblings were all at home - my mom was at work. It was a complete loss, everything was gone including their 2 cats. They had no rental insurance and had to completely start over. I lived about 3 blocks away and the explosion shook my house like you would't believe.

I was very tight with many friends here at the time, and many people sent many items to my mom and siblings. I will never forget them for that - just the cards and words of concern meant so much to my mom.
