Craigslist

I do some selling on Ebay, but I'm a bit over their raising fees and the whole experience.

I'm thinking of listing on Craigslist but I kind of have an issue with the whole face to face thing. We live in South Fla, and lets face it, we have crime. I don't want to have people coming to my house, and I'm not thrilled with meeting people, even in a public place.

Has anyone sold on Craigslist where they accept payment via Paypal & ship the item?

I don't think it would work. Craigslist doesn't offer any guarantees that they'll step in if the seller doesn't ship. There's no feedback mechanism, so prospective buyers won't be able to see if you are trustworthy.

I wouldn't buy anything from someone on Craigslist where I had to provide payment before receiving the items.

I didn't think about that. But, doesn't Paypal protect the buyer? I guess I could provide a link to my Ebay feedback. I dunno, I'm just trying to give less "to the man"....LOL

I do lots of selling on craigslist. I meet people in a public place where there are lots of other people around I usually bring my dog. I have met people in front of the police station because they sounded weird so I told them that's where I meet everyone.

I think if you stay in well lit and well traveled areas of the public you will be fine. Maybe you know someone who owns or works at an eating establishment they can keep an eye on you there.

I would not worry about it as long as you use common sense, do NOT go anywhere with anyone for any reason.

I don't feel threatened in any way.

I've tried selling on Craigslist with no luck...only scammers. When I did ebay years ago, if someone wanted to meet in person for pick up, I would meet them in a very public place like the Post Office or grocery store. I pay for a mail box at a local Mail Mart (shipping and gift store). There have been times I have left the item there, told them who was picking it up and time, told them to ask for ID and take the payment for me. I gave them a couple dollars to help me out. Of coarse, I trust them and have been doing business with them for years.

I would never have someone coming to my house (first reason I got a mailbox...so no one on ebay would see my home address when they made a purchase).

Good luck. I know people who do great on Craigslist but personally, it's been a bust for me

I tried putting a couple things on craigslist, also only got scammers..some of them wanted to meet me in person, gave me fake names/phone numbers when I asked their #s or names to check them out before meeting them...mmmkay.

I know a few people who use it in other cities and like to sell stuff that way but I have not had good experiences. Weirdos is what I got. And if someone seems/sounds weird online, then I have no desire to meet them even in a public/crowded place...even if I'm technically 'safe' still, making a few bucks isn't worth it to me if it creeps me out. eBay is more my style where you don't have to see people in person

ETA danni about paypal - if you meet someone and give them an item, and they paid via paypal, then how do you prove delivery? I remember reading a post from someone on here awhile back, who did that...met someone, sold a high $ item then a couple months later the buyer filed non-performing with paypal and got the $$ back because the seller could not prove delivery. That was a long time ago so it might have changed, though.

I've sold a couple of things on Craig's list. I listed on Thursday and met the individual in parking lots; once by his ATM. With the fees for the sale of goods, I don't think I'm interested in Paypal.

I insisted on cash.

paypal will NOT protect the seller if you meet in person. Seller has to prove delivery with a tracking number if the buyer says they never received. I would never take paypal for an in person transaction

I like the idea of meeting in front of the local police station. That would scare away the scammers or wackos

Not that long ago, we had a woman killed in front of a local police station by her estranged husband. She was trying to run inside for help. Talk about whackos! An extreme example...but still....

I am guessing he would have killed her anywhere he found her. Most scammers or wackos would be a problem in locations where THEY feel safe to practice their activities..and maybe ther police station would not be thae spot for them.

Everything we've sold on Craigslist has sold. They come to our house (all the items were large). We just sold a garden tractor a couple of weeks ago.

All the people we have dealt with are really nice people.

Usually you can tell the scammers. I've had some email and say something like 'I will buy your item right now.'

I have bought things on Craigslist and sold a couple of furniture items with no problem. I think there might be those that are flakes, but in general, I think the sellers are legitimate. I would never go alone to pick up an item or be alone when an item has been picked up though.

I've bought a number of things from Craiglist, but always went to the seller's house or met them someplace public. I've never sent them payment in advance.

Wow, I've bought alot off of Craigslist. Now I'm feeling truly like an idiot, but I even have went to houses by myself to look at the stuff and buy it!! Now, in retrospect, I wouldn't do it again.

But now I take someone with me, and try to feel people out. Also, I'm starting to only go to places in my part of town.

Isn't it amazing how trusting we are???

My son bought a car on craigs list. The seller said it had a new engine and new transmission. My son believed them. Then found out after he bought it that it didnt have anything new. It had almost 200k miles on the stupid car. He met the guy in a parking lot every time he looked at it, and has the guys cell number. I called the cops, and there is nothing they can do. They are buying and selling vehicles and advertising them like that to everyone.

That's too bad. I guess your son doesn't watch very many Judge Joe Brown or Judge Judy shows....the burden is on the buyer to get a used vehicle checked out by a mechanic and used vehicle private sales are as-is. I guess I don't really see how this is a Craiglist issue...same thing could happen with a newspaper ad, right?

I have bought some items off Craigslist and gone to peoples houses by myself to pick them up. Depends on who I am dealing with whether I feel the need to take someone with me or not. I purchased a tv and went by myself and met the woman on her lunch hour at her house, no one was there and I did call my husband and tell him I was going in, the address where I was and if I didn't call him back in 10 minutes, he better call the police, LOL. I have purchased a clothes dryer off Craigslist and of course took hubby because he needed to help load it. Also, purchased a cell phone and DD went with me to look at it because it was for her, but DH waited in the car outside it was night time and I didn't feel comfortable going at night. The lady we bought the phone from though, brought us all the way through her house into the kitchen so we could test out the phone, no one was home with her, we could have been nutjobs or murderers or something, I don't think I would have invited a stranger into my house. I have sold a couple of bags of teenager clothing on Craigslist and I have met the person in a public place in the parking lot, other than this I haven't had much luck selling, but I have had good luck buying.
