Where In The World Was Gov. Sanford?

You've probably heard that Gov. Mark Sanford of SC appears to have simply disappeared for four days. It seems not even his wife, or the lt. gov. of the state knew where he was. He claims to have been hiking on the Appalachian Trail, although recent reports of his car being found in Atlanta make that a little questionable.

So, what do you think? Where in the world was he? What was he doing? And do you think it's reasonable for a state governor to be incommunicado for four days?

My guess would be something involving sex. I liked the one that he and Sarah Palin were off having sex and smoking pot in an Atlanta hotel. LOL
And yes, I think it's fine to be out of communication occasionally. It's a job, not a prison term. That's what a chain of command is for. Although, he should have told someone so that they could be prepared.

I don't think it's ever ok for the state governor to be completely unreachable -- much less for four days! Being governor of a state is a 24/7 job -- even if you're not working every minute of every day, you're still "on duty" and should always be reachable.

I've heard rumors of a dalliance, male or female. Of course, they're nothing but rumors, but when you disappear like this, you leave yourself very vulnerable for those kinds of rumors, I think.

Now he's saying that he switched flights to arrive in Atlanta instead of Columbia. But, he left a state owned car at the airport in Atlanta.. That car was hoiw the newspaper found him.

My husband met him before. His opinion is that Sanford is quite stupid. He is genuinely frugal which is odd for someone who was born to wealth.

Out hiking the Appalachian trail? Had to issue and Ambler Alert.

It's never the crime, it's the cover-up. Wouldn't you think a Republican would have learned that lesson from Nixon?

Sanford said it's a woman -- but, then, we know Sanford lies. OTOH, The State paper has now a series of emails between Sanford and his paramour.

On the View this morning, I think it was, one of the hosts said that when his wife was questioned about it, she said "I'm being a mom today, I have not heard from my husband" or something to that effect. Sounded to me like she knew he was parking the porpoise in someone else's garage, if you know what I mean.

Sad. Very sad. What is it with men who think they can lie and get away with it?? DUH!!!

Exactly. This guy KNOWS how many other people have been "caught" -- what would make him believe that HE wouldn't be caught???

What is it with men who are willing to ruin their lives for sex??? What is it about sex that would make a man hurt his wife, kids, family, friends, constituents, colleagues, etc. etc.? Is the sex really worth it?

I don't understand the utter, sheer selfishness of it

Yes, she knew. She's known for 5 months or so according to the reports. And they seperated a few weeks ago.

It blows my mind that so many men will sacrifice their families and careers to park the porpoise (love it! ) in a younger, prettier, sexier woman.....

It's amazing to me how this stuff gets all blown up when it's someone in the limelight that gets caught. I do think it's wrong that his staff didn't know where he was; and yes, I agree that this should not have happened. BUT, it does...everyday...with so many business men, regular guys...and the wives and others have NO idea. It's sad how common this is and how so many people (the mistress included) get hurt in all of it! I think what happened is that he first became friends with this woman and then crossed a line (I think we recently had a post that dealt with that)...and then got wrapped up in all of it. They probably had great sex and then, lo and behold, his heart got involved (I know this happens with women, and I think it does with men, too)...and then he got caught. I can bet you this happens everyday. I'm not saying that it's right--it isn't, but it seems like it's something that is widespread in our society today. Sad, but true.

It gets blown up because the guy is a lying hypocrite who, in the past, has been more than happy to condemn others who have done what he did. And a man who has been more than happy to tell others how to live moral lives while he does not. A man who trumpets the sanctity of marriage and family and then destroys his own. A man who thinks that allowing gay marriage will ruin that sanctity, but his "parking the porpoise in someone else's garage", (I do love that phrase), does not, as long as he doesn't get caught.

Those business men might or might not get caught and if they do, that will hurt their family and their marriage, but they aren't the one in the limelight spouting about morals and telling others how to live their lives, and trying to pass laws to force other to abide by their "when it's convenient for me" moral stances.

They also aren't the ones possibly using taxpayer money to fly to Argentina on "government" business. They aren't the ones lying to their staff and constituents. They have not been elected to run a state and then disappear for almost a week, leaving no one in charge. The people of SC have been poorly used, as have his family and his staff and friends.

I moved to SC in 92 and was shocked to hear Thurman so well spoken of. All I remembered about him was his vehement opposition to civil rights It's ironic that his affair with a black woman wasn't confirmed until after his death.

Lots of hypocrites in this state.

I think Sanford should resign.

allinaugust, I find it almost humorous that you quoted me BUT not Susiecat as well. Any way, Sen. Thurmond may not have publicly acknowledged his daughter. However, if you have taken the time to research the man, he did acknowledge her privately throught out the years. Also, I think all of you seem to forget that 1925 South Carolina was VASTLY different from the SC of today. Do I agree with all of his views on things over the years? No, BUT I will give him credit for the accomplishments that he made over the years as well.

I saw one poster call him "trash" BUT given the source, I expected nothing less from them.

Getting this post back on topic, I am wondering why so many are calling for Gov. Sanford to resign his position?? Wasn't it just a few years ago that a Democrat in a much higher office did the same type of thing BUT the same people did not expect him to step down from his position? We were told back then that what was done behind closed doors was his family's business. Why is a mere Governor being held to a higher standard than a President? Oh, that's right because Gov. Sanford is a Republican.

Because Clinton didn't go AWOL while in office and he didn't spout the "family values" crap while he was parking the porpoise in Lewinsky's pie hole.

lol.. Such eloquence. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I might add that I think Sanford was one of those who was asking Clinton to step down. If he thought that then, I think it's time for him to follow his own advice.

I agree. I think he should step down. He certainly doesn't have his mind on South Carolina or the Republican Party. For a man to give up the love of his wife and respect of his children for an affair, in my opinion, isn't much of a man. I believe this of anyone, Republican or Democrat, if they don't have the control not to have an affair, I sure don't want them trying to run my government.

Yep! Again...this Republican says....kick his butt out of office!

I do think that a person can be forgiven and changes can be made.People make mistakes. (I am not excusing his actions) I hope that he and his wife can work it out. BUT...I still don't want him running the government or representing the Republican Party at this time. When you are in politics, you are held to a higher standard. Not that you can't make mistakes, but you have to live with the consequences. One of the consequeces is that a lot of people will no longer trust you-ever. You as a politician asked to be in the public eye - you made that decision yourself when you decided to run for office. Don't complain when you screw up and are in the spotlight.

Strom was the stereotypical southern white boy and his values matched that. I'm from SC and can not imagine being proud of that man (term man being used lightly). The problem with Sanford out of office is the moron who will replace him. He was caught on the news saying without Sanford here if there was a jail break he wouldn't know what to do. First, the second in command should know that crap and second, he should know better than to say something that makes him look so stupid.

While Sanford is a screw up and does suck, the alternative to him is worse than putting Beavis or Butthead as Govenor. He's in Columbia meeting with his people tomorrow morning, so we should know soon. Anyone want to trade govenors?

You can have Gov. Corzine -- he'll tax you to death and run your state finances into the toilet.

He's another one that's been in the news for 'missing in action' -- not women but doing other things other than being governor of Virginia.

Too. Darn. Funny. I guess that's kind of a backward compliment, actually, since I'm not sure I'd want to be in the group of people you approve of.

I stand by calling Thumond racist trash. He was.

Actually, I was not bad mouthing you BUT stating that no matter what, you always come out against Republicans.
Also, if you had bothered to READ my post, I stated that I disagreed with many things that he did over the years BUT will still give him respect for the accomplishments he made in his lifetime. I am not a fan of Clinton by any stretch of the imagination BUT will not call him trash because I disagree with some of the things that he did while in office. I even give him props for the accomplishments that he has made as well. So before attempting to twist & attack my words, you really should READ everything!

And for the ones that are harping on the fact that he did not recognize his daugher PUBLICLY, did any of you catch the part where I stated that he acknowledged her privately? It boggles my mind that you all are so bitter towards something that the man did waaaaaay back in 1925 BUT we are supposed to forgive & forget more recent events made by political officials. Also, I believe you have forgotten how different things were in the South back in 1925.

Shaking head here!! You can continue to bash me if you like but I will stand firm in my beliefs. I was raised to respect the accomplishments of others even if I disagree with some of the things that they do at any given time.
