| Promulgating myth
For the past week or so, right wing blogger, Larry Johnson, has been saying that a tape exists of Michelle Obama trash talking "whitey." In fact, someone mentioned the rumor here with great confidence that it was true. Indeed, it was to have been produced the very next day from the the initial post. It still hasn't surfaced. How anyone can be gullible enough to swallow such garbage, or Obama is a Muslim or whatever else garbage is out there is just beyond me. This is a link to the right wing blog and his latest assertions: An Update on the Michelle Obama Rant : NO QUARTER And look who's been promulgating the smear: YouTube - Michelle Obama Use The Word "Whitey?" Hannity Have The Tape? YouTube - Fox News Bob Beckel Hints At Michelle Obama Bombshell The plot thickens! NRO has found a similar plot in a novel; The Campaign Spot on National Review Online Perhaps this is the elusive tape: YouTube - Michelle Obama's Whitey Video |

I would not surprise me if such a tape is out there. I have noticed that Obama will not answer a direct yes or no to the question about if it does exist. He tends to ramble on about internet emails but never answers the question with just a yes or no. And he appears defensive about a reporter asking the question. Obama style..same way with the questions concerning his "former" preacher. Ben Smith's Blog: Obama denies a rumor and questions the question - Politico.com I did make mention in another post about this but only after a poster wanted the information. I stated then it was just a rumor but something I thought Obama was going to have to deal with. |

I agree with Obama. His answer was precise. There is no need to address an unfounded allegation. It would be outrageous. It would surprise me if a such a tape was out there. So far, the GOP has gotten the American population to believe he's a Muslim, a radical black militant, someone who believes in reparations, and, although none of the other candidates wear a flag pin, Obama hates this country. I can see it now. Everything we get from the GOP from the from now on will be variations of : "blackety, black, black." |

My elderly neighbor is convinced that Senator Obama is a Muslim, won't salute the flag, etc. etc. His computer has been down for months but he gets lots of mail from conservative organizations so it's not only the internet that's spreading the "information". Since I take him grocery shopping and to other appointments, thinking he isn't going to be happy when an Obama bumper sticker shows up on my car. |

| Here is a site that did a good job at showing the timeline of the alleged tape: Reason Magazine - Hit & Run > Everything's Gonna Be All White I'd think someone who is ex-CIA would have at least tried to see the video before spreading the stories that he is doing. Makes me wonder how effective he was in his job. I don't believe Michelle O said what they are claiming she said. But they have succeeded in making people believe in the tape, even if it turns out it was all a made up lie.

According to Daily Kos, the tape is actually of Michelle saying "Why'd he", but of course the right wing wing nut sheeple have spun it into "whitey". Seriously, it's what I expect out of them anyway. Daily Kos: State of the Nation

Anyone remember the rumors about Bush Sr.? His foes said that even though there was no evidence of his secret trip at all, the allegation itself was so serious that it warranted an investigation. And then the special investigator dogged him for months, only to end up saying there was no evidence. Does this rise to that level? |

Myth would be something like the allegation made against Proctor and Gamble that their logo is demonic. That's been going on for 50 years and I doubt that's there's a week that goes by where P&G doesn't have to deny the rumor. |

That's been going on for 50 years and I doubt that's there's a week that goes by where P&G doesn't have to deny the rumor.[/QUOTE] Right. That's a myth. There was no evidence at all that Bush Sr made a trip anywhere - someone suggested it and it got legs and turned into an investigation. Because of his former CIA status it was conceivable that he would have what it took to pull such a thing off, however, there was not any evidence that he *did* - just an accusation. That's all it took to make it worth investigating in the eyes of his enemies. With M.O., *her* past, basking in the words of Rev. Wrong in the pew for so many years without, as far as any of us have heard, challenging on his sometimes flagrant statements, could lead one to believe that her silence meant she was in step with him. Twenty years in his pews when she was free to leave if she found him offensive... and yet rather than leaving, she continued to embrace him to the point that he not only married she and "O" but he also baptized their children. Personally, if I were in a church where the preacher made statements like that 'preacher' made - even if they were supportive of the Right - I'd find a new church. Her continued allegiance to him does lead one to question her agreement with him. "Whitey" sounds like something he'd say. Like Bush Sr., her past allegiance to an entity with a specific agenda allows rumors to grow legs quickly, regardless of the evidence that's available. If it turns out such a tape DOES exist, will you find it excusable? |

First of all, I would be surprised if any such tape existed. If it did exist then ir would move from baseless allegation to fact. Iran Contra was more associated with Reagan than Bush 41 and it did happen. Reagan did agree to sell arms (purchased with profits made from running drugs) to the Iranians if they waited to let the prisoners go until he took office. They made an announcement one month before the election. This is what October surprise refers to. Of course, the CIA was involved and Bush 41 has CIA ties. Never heard anything about him taking a trip. In fact, I would be dubious that he would work that way. He probably was involved in that operation to somee degree. |
