I'll admit I haven't a clue about the rationale of Russia's attack. I'm sure that if I researched I could find the answer, but so far the only thing I've been able to find is that Russia felt Georgia may be gearing up to protect themselves???

I'm just really hoping that the US doesn't decide that we need to get up in the middle of this one...My friend (USMC) is getting to come home (hopefully to stay and finish out his commission) after a year or so in Iraq. I don't see how the US can stretch our military any thinner!

Most of the foreign media: Georgia attacked South Ossetia then Russia attacked Georgia.

Once again "energy sources" are playing a part in this.

From what I've heard and read, a part of Georgia wanted to break away from Georgia and not be a part of it anymore and Russia was coming in to defend the part of Georgia that wants to break away. I'm guessing they're wanting to be a part of Russia now?????

Georgia is a sovereign nation that used to be part of the Soviet Union. There are 2 regions of Georgia which wish to be independent of Georgia. Georgia sent soldiers into these regions as soon as the Olympics started. Russia sent quite a bit of firepower to successfully push the Georgian military out of these regions.

Georgia, which by the way is friendly to the US, probably thought we would come to their assistance. These breakaway regions are friendly to Russia.
