That was a well thought out and honest response, not something we usually get from politicians. He spoke to man as an adult who has the capacity to understand. He didn't pander or throw out meaningless phrases. He was respectful and acknowleded the man's concerns and didn't use fear or divisiveness to make his point.

I saw that on the news the other night (NO, not FOX news) and at the end of the segment they said that the man probably was not going to vote for Obama.

Ha, I like the line about giving him a break for health care. What he didn't tell him is that if he doesn't provide health care, he'll be fined.

Why is it sickening that he would be fined if he did not provide health care for his employees? The employees have children and spouses that need the assurances of a good health care plan.

Yeah. . .because small business owners, having had been one for 8 years myself, have children and spouses too that need the assurancees of a good health care plan too. They have limited resources like everybody else. And when it comes down to it, they will not hire employees if they can't afford to pay federally mandated insurance. . .especially if they are not able to afford it for their own families.

For example. . .my ex was a painting contractor. We almost never "hired" employees. We simply couldn't afford it. We hired labor. . .from places like Labor Ready. And that is exactly what will happen if small businesses are required by the federal government to cover their employees. Not because most small businesses wouldn't LOVE to be able to, they simply cannot afford it. They will cut back on the number of people they employ in order to stay in business.

If you have a babysitter are you ready and able to pay her medical insurance? Same difference.

Coverage

McCain wants to tax employer-sponsored health insurance as income, removing the tax exemptions currently granted to the 177 million Americans covered through their workplaces. If employees kept their employer-based insurance policy (the average value of which is now $12,000), it would be considered income. To offset the tax burden, a tax credit would be granted, up to $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families. Employees could apply the tax credit toward the insurance, thus offsetting the tax hit. Or they could drop their employer-provided insurance altogether, avoid the tax penalty, and then combine the tax credit with any money they were contributing to the policy, and buy insurance on the open market.

The federal government would work with states to create a Guaranteed Access Plan to ensure that people are not denied coverage for preexisting conditions. To foster competition, insurance could be sold across state lines, something that cannot be done now in most states.

Obama would require that all employers either offer health benefits to their employees or contribute to the cost of a new public program. Small employers and individuals with no job-based insurance could enroll in this new Medicare-like plan, and subsidies would be available based on income. All children would be required to have health insurance, and Medicaid and SCHIP (federal insurance for children) would be expanded.


So they would be required to pay into the new public program. . .kinda Medicare II. I imagine if they don't provide a benefit or pay into the government program there would be fines. Just like if employers don't pay FICA.

Also note, McCain's plan would also cover preexisting conditions. I know somebody asked about that earlier.
