Religion and Politics

I was listening to some more about Obama and his pastor's theology which is basically "social gospel of liberation." That's a direct quote from one of the new pastors of their church. So my question is, SO much emphasis was put on Romney and the Theology of his church, why aren't we doing the same for Obama? If Romney's church was spreading a Hate filled message then I understand that, but it's what Obama's church is doing and no one is saying anything.

IMO, Senator Obama's church affiliation is getting much more scrutiny then that given to Governor Romney's membership in the Morman Church. Apparently you disagree but it's probably a matter of "whose ox is getting gored". I for one dislike and actually fear the path we seem determined to take tying faith and government closer and closer. IMO it lessens and demeans both. As an aside, I hope you are listening to more then just the soundbites of Rev Wright's sermons which are being played over and over on tv and radio.

Have you even checked out what the Black Liberation Theology is? It's not just a matter of soundbites, Check out the website of the church itself. I don't think we should make anything out of someone's religion UNLESS their religion preaches hate, preaches anti-american things, like the US started the aids virus... things like that.

Yes, I have checked the website of the church.

Trinity United Church of Christ

I see nothing on the website which changes my mind about my support of Senator Obama. If all church goers were held as strictly accountable for the beliefs of their church, let alone lived by all the tenets preached by their church leaders (which many assume of the Senator) there would be many many unhappy and probably churchless Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Jews, Muslims, etc., etc.

The church website has now removed this on their "about us" page..but you can still find it by doing a google search on news articles and blogs.

That was the site I saw originally. Again, if we're going to hold all candidates and their various religious beliefs and practices to the standards apparently expected of Senator Obama then I don't think there is a candidate running that is electable. IMO, there is no greater example of the poor judgement of the electorate who vote on religious beliefs then the current occupant of the White House.

isn't that the church that said we brought 9/11 on ourselves??? I know there are some people outside of that church that share the same belief, but, I think that's crazy.

I think Obama is taking plenty of heat for this situation, and rightfully so. The beliefs of a church are also the beliefs of its parishoners. That is why people go to different churches, right?? Many people also go to their spiritual leaders for guidance. Who wants a president that is going to a church like this??? I think THAT is the problem.

The pastor at the Clintons' church in D. C. has spoken with approval of Wright's comments. I guess we have to assume that Clinton, then, agrees with what Wright said as well, since her pastor praised Wright. I haven't heard her condemn her own pastor yet.

D.C. Church Wrinkles Clinton On Wright - Decision 2008 News Story - KTVU San Francisco

"Hillary Clinton is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Little Rock, Ark. But the Clintons regularly attended Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., when it was led by another pastor, the Rev. J. Philip Wogaman."

"The Clinton campaign distanced itself from Foundry in a statement to the Guardian America Web site on Tuesday.
"I think not being a member of, or attending a service there for the past seven years, speaks for itself, and renders the hypothetical moot," Clinton senior aide Philippe Reines told Guardian America."

You are so correct! I think it's very scary if Obama becomes our president. Who knows what he has up his sleeve when he's been listening to Rev. Wright all these years. When you have a pastor like the Rev. Wright and you as a parishoner don't confront him, then to me, you have no problem with what the person is preaching. I've been a member of churches before that my DH and I have left because we didn't agree with what the pastor was preaching from the pulpit.

To stay in a church where the pastor says from the pulpit "God damn America" and other sorts of nonsense says you're in agreement with what the pastor is saying and it worries me that Obama stays and agrees with him. Scary instead!!

Member of a church in a state she hasn't lived in in over 15 years? Quite the devout Christian, isn't she?

Throwing her supposedly former pastor under the bus when it suits her? Yep, that's the Hill for you.

Wonder where she's been going to church for the past seven years?

ETA: I don't care what Clinton's religious preferences or beliefs are, but if she's going to criticize other people's pastors, she better make sure her own house is in order. This is like Clinton would be like her criticizing Silda Spitzer for standing beside her husband!
