legalized marijuana and other drugs

How do you feel about the war on drugs? Should marijuana and other drugs be legalized?
Do you know how your presidential candidate stands on this issue?

Here are a few quotes

“My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that’s something I’m open to because there’s no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said. “But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.” - Barack Obama

"Every medical expert I know of, including the AMA, says that there are much more effective and much better treatments for pain than medical marijuana ... I still would not support medical marijuana because I don't think that the preponderance of medical opinion in America agrees ... that it's the most effective way of treating pain." - John McCain

Myself..I agree more with Ron Paul

"I'm for it. And for it for medical reason, and for it for political reason - people ought to be able to make their own choices - and for constitutional reasons - in, that is, there shouldn't be any 'thou shalt nots' by the federal government that somebody can't smoke or drink something...but, the principal is that in a free society people should be able to make up their own mind what they put in their bodies whether its nutritional substances or whether they're smoking medical marijuana." - Ron Paul

I absolutely think marijuana should have been legalized a long time ago. But now how can they? Think about it. Since cigarette smoking has been banned in so many places how can they legalize pot now? What are they going to say...you can't smoke cigarettes because of the 2nd hand smoke, but you can smoke pot. Not going to happen.

I just don't see ANY politician jumping into this debate.

Just compare the effects on peoples behavior after drinking alcohol compared to smoking pot. I totally think pot should have been legal all along. If it was legalized then maybe our government could get out of crazy debt by selling it themselves. I don't agree with dnj51's thinking on being able to smoke pot and not ciggies places; I think that pot smoking could be lumped in with ciggie smoking and only allowed certain places. I would never smoke pot or cigarettes anywhere where children are present just because of the 2nd hand issues and it would be my choice to smoke whatever and I do not think I should inflict my choices on others.

One of the things I agree with Ron Paul on, one of very few. But our economy is so tied up with keeping it illegal that I don't see getting popular opinion behind a change, at least any time soon.

Anyone who isn't familiar with the Liverpool drug clinics in the 80's and 90's should find out about them. They had something that worked and for some reason decided to stop doing it. I have wondered what ever happened to those people who were leading nice lives as addicts and had all that taken away from them.

There was a time in this country when no drug was regulated. While i wouldn't want to go back to those days, I do think that Marijuana should be legalized. It has properties which combat nausea as for those undergoing chemotherapy. It also has some use in the treatment of glaucoma. It might be tough to regulate since it can be grown pretty well anywhere. But, it isn't a dangerous drug. It doesn't have to be smoked. I imagine they could take the active ingredient and put it in tablet form or, who deoen't like brownies?

I found this reference to the Liverpool drug clinics: Rx Drugs - The Liverpool, England method Does seem like a common sense approach. Afghanistan has just produced another bumper crop of opium. Of course, heroin isn't even allowed medically here.

Just to clarify - I did not mean that pot smoking would be allowed where cigarette smoking was not...I meant that they could not legalize pot smoking while banning other smoking. It would make no sense.

smoking pot really helps people who are paralyzed and have muscle spasms. Works lots better than the pills that take a hr or so to work. who wants to wait for a pill to kick in , ly in pain from spasms, when a few tokes off a joint takes care of the spasm in 10-15 min's. one of my clients smoked it for that very reason and it really worked for him.

Interesting...

"Representatives Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) and Ron Paul (R-Texas) introduced House Resolution 5843 which would decriminalize, at a federal level, the possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana."

Legislators aim to snuff out penalties for pot use - CNN.com
