Question Global Poverty Act of 2007

Sponsored by Barack Obama. I don't think we've mentioned this one on here before. If we did, I missed that discussion.

Anyway, I was reading an article about this today, and it said that a "typical" family of 4 (what is that????) would be taxed $8,000 to fund this bill, and it would not be used to help anyone in the USA.

Comments???

Actually it was discussed a while back in this thread (see 2nd page):

Consensus seemed to be it was fulfillment of a commitment made by the current CIC.

Not just fulfillment of a commitment..but expanded on it ..by adding millions of more dollars onto the bill and granting more UN conditions.

I still stand by my comments in the other thread especially
"What is wrong with it in the simplest way...taking money from the working class of America and giving it to others while people in the US suffer. If someone wants to donate to places to help with poverty that is their business."

Actually Ron Paul today had put out a comment about names of bills.
"The answer is that there is more to any bill than its name or the headlines surrounding it. If one only paid attention to bill titles, one could happily vote for almost any bill put to a vote on the floor. Titles do not tell the complete story of a bill’s provisions, and many titles are downright deceptive and come close to emotional blackmail of legislators. ....
One shouldn’t judge legislation based on titles, good intentions, or what someone says the bill will do. Imagine if all the legislation in the history of this country actually did what the title of the bills proclaimed they would do. How very different this country would be! There would be no poverty, no drugs, no crime"
Digg - “What’s in a bill name?”

My feelings are that we need to fix the mess in our OWN country first. Bush totally screwed over and made a mess of schools, funding for special needs programs and other domestic programs. Once we can get on solid ground here, I am happy to help out other countries.

I was so proud after seeing the US Olympic flag bearer in the Opening Games ceremony was one of the Lost Boys. When we lived in VT, about 20 of these boys were sponsored by the community and they were the most people I have ever met. These boys were mostly teens who did not know English. They learned the language, excelled in school, volunteered in the community, etc. These guys had nothing and lived in a country where children were fighting for their lives and they were given an opportunity and they grabbed it and ran with it. The community donated bikes to the boys and you would see them riding all over town and it was so neat considering what they came from. Not sure if this was a grass roots effort or if the government helped out, but I would so love to see more of this in the years to come.

Sorry for totally veering off path, but if we're reaching out, that's a direction I would love to see happen, but unfortunately, they're not sitting on a butt load of oil
