Wonder if she will laugh at cancer survivors and fat people?

I do hope a lot of people on this board would at least be "open-minded" enough to listen to Palin's speech tonight.
A lot of Republicans(on this board) have commented on watching some of the speech's from the DNC convention.

I watched the Democratic convention. I enjoy listening to people who can speak and project a good message. I especially enjoyed seeing Ted Kennedy. You gotta give it to the man.....even brain cancer won't keep him away. He LOVES his party.

I will be watching the Republican convention as well.

I will watch. I love that there is a woman involved in this election. Now I wont vote for her because her views, social and otherwise, are extremely opposite of mine but I will be watching. Probably will watch on CSPAN so I don't have to listen to the talking heads afterward.

He loves his party, but loves his COUNTRY even more. Which is why he is such a strong supporter of the best candidate in this race, Mr. Obama.

I'm not watching, but listening for the most part.

She does not seem the least bit intimidated by what the left has said, and neither does her family. They just seem proud of her, as well they should!! I think her silence was misinterpreted. I don't think you'll get her to shut up now!!!! lol

She was really something. I can so relate to her as a conservative mother, but I can't imagine having her courage. What a woman!!

Things are gonna get ugly. I have no doubt she can take it though!!!

She is an accomplished speaker, but I don't vote on speeches. I congratulate her on her poise though.

I know she didn't write much - if any - of that speech.

But the fact that six days ago we didn't even know who she was and she hadn't even see the text of it, and she's been on the campaign trail and... dang, she's a quick study.

Loved the line, "I guess being a small town mayor is sort of like being a community organizer except you have actual responsibilities."

Loved the Scranton/San Fran. line.

Her delivery was flawless and her confidence unmistakable.

And I'm struck at how feminine she is. She's obviously tough as nails and not someone to be messed with... and yet so feminine at the same time. I think it's nice that she doesn't seem to feel the need to compromise the fact that she's a girl.

Loved the, "I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion...." line.

I heard more than one talking head say that a star was born tonight. They said that about BO four years ago so apparently the talking heads get it right some of the time.

Yup, she knocked my socks off. As I heard someone say, you can't learn that quality she has. It's natural and comes so easy, and that's what makes her very dangerous to the Democratic agenda.

The race is on, kids. The race is on!

Oh, my.

That was really more than anyone could have hoped for. She's something! Even the nay-sayers were handing it to her afterward.

This has to be more than anyone on either side expected.

And I think she handled EVERYTHING about her family with a great deal of understated grace and pride. Every one of those kids - even Bristol - looked nothing but united and proud of their mom.

This is truly exciting!

I sure wanted to take that little girl home. Which one is she? Willow? Piper?

I asked my 10yo if he'd care if we had her come live with us and he rolled his eyes, so I guess I won't be extending the offer to babysit for the next couple of months - lol!

I don't feel defensive at all. I was reacting to your condescension. You implied that though you don't vote according to speeches......other's might. Nor was I being nasty....funny, maybe, nasty, no.

Should I have said "I don't vote on speeches either!!" in my most whiney Repulican voice?? no. I chose sarcasm. sorry.

I never implied anything other than I thought she delivered a good speech. Never implied you and ANYONE else for that matter voted on speeches. And, nasty is in the eye of the beholder...and I beheld your ungracious response as nasty. But, not surprising to me.....

You know what, I am really happy to accept your apologies. I have found that too often on this particular board, people react to the POSTER not the POST. Thanks Mom for actually reading what I had to say.

What a great speech!! It was a home run - waaaaayyy out of the park! I loved her opening about having a normal family w/ its up and downs; the part where she said mayors have responsibilities; the part where she introduced her family and mentioned that other mothers will be saying an extra prayer for their sons or daughters in Iraq; oh...heck, I loved it all. She's a spitfire and I think she's great and just what DC needs. It's a great night to be an Alaskan and an American!

I have been someone who, though I am a Democrat, have been a bit excited about her. Well I was left cold tonight. I just heard nothing special. After about the first 5 minutes I started wanting it to be over. I know i could have just gotten up and walked off but I felt I needed to give her a chance. I did miss the last few minutes because I really had things to do. I am surprised that any of the talking heads were enthusiastic afterward. I am not sure what exactly turned me off. I expected to hear her put down Obama so I don't think that was it. Oh well, to each his own.

I did love the little girl, Piper, she was eating it up and it was really cute. And the baby was awake at the end and I loved seeing him.

Oh The Irony

First - Dems almost get a woman into the White House so the GOP grabs their coattail and selects a woman VP.

Then - the GOP spend months criticizing Obama’s lack of experience and selects a VP with a lack of experience.

All along - Reps suggest that Dems are blindly following Obama like he has some mystical power that they can’t refuse.

Now - along comes a speech from Palin and the Love Fest begins. Obviously Palin has sprinkled magic fairy dust on Reps and they are blindly following the Chosen One

Her delivery was quite good. The tone of the speech was, however, sarcastic and nasty in places.

I think that it's quite odd that she would even bring up the bridge to nowhere since it's been well publized that she actively sought those funds.

She was sarcastic at times, but, that is exactly what the Republicans wanted, IMO. This woman has been belittled and badgered since she was introduced. She needed to show that she is no shrinking violet, and she can hold her own. I loved the speech, she was composed, gracious, and fierce. LOVED the hockey mom joke, obviously. And, did anyone see the Hoosier's button???

DH and I were watching together, and they showed someone wearing a campaign button that said "Hoosiers for the Hot Chick", then the camera went up a bit to show the person's face and it was an elderly man. Oh, DH and I just LOVED IT!!! I'd love to get my hands on that button. PRICELESS.

I think we all have to agree, this election has really got people talking and more people are getting involved in the process. That can only be a good thing, whatever party you support.

Oh, and DH and I both loved the part where Trig's sister was licking her hand and fixing his hair. Soooo cute!!!!

Piper definitely stole the show. Poor baby must have had a very wet head by the end of that speech.

I tried to just add this to my post above, but, for some reason it wouldn't let me EDIT, so I'll try posting it on its own:

ETA: I did want to address the "Bridge to nowhere" also. I think there is more to the story than just she originally supported it, so why the flip-flopping now??? I hope this get cleared up.

Also, speaking of flip-flopping, I don't think I like that term. I think as we grow and learn, we are entitled to change our opinions on things. EX: so much is being made about Gov. Palin's pregnant DD and how Dan Quayle chastised Murphy Brown for being an unwed mother. This was many years ago, and I think people are entitled to change their mind based on different things. Back in my parent's day, unwed mothers were considered whores and brought shame to the family. Things change, opinions change. I think this flip-flopping term is being thrown around a bit too much.

My guess about the Bridge to Nowhere is that Alaska asked for the full $400M to build it, but was only granted $200M in federal earmarks. It wasn't so important to Alaska that they were willing to foot the bill for the other half, so they told Washington that they were going to refuse the funding unless they would be allowed to spend it on another transportation project.

I also think it was a pet project of the Republican governor that she helped oust, and that perhaps she towed the company line prior to figuring out he was dirty she was for pretty much whatever her party was for. Then she figured out he was corrupt and as part of cutting him out of politics, she was cutting ties to the projects he'd pushed.

The reason I say this is because they've said she was for it before she was governor. That tells me that it wasn't *her* project, and yet the word came down that they'd been included in an earmark bill *after* she was in office. She went from being someone who could speak in theoretical terms (Yeah, that sounds like a good thing!) to having the pen that would have to sign off on spending $200M of Alaska's money to make that bridge a reality.

Things are a lot different when the buck stops with you. And she turned down the funding prior to being on the VP short list, so the decision to do so wasn't politically motivated. Or if it was, it would've been for her Alaska politics, not national politics.

I have heard exactly what you stated in the first paragragh. I know that Ted Stevens is the one who actually placed the earmark. I do know that she supported building the bridge to nowhere while she was campaigning for governor. She has funded building a road to where the bridge to nowhere would start.

It almost seems to me that congress should either fully fund projects or not fund them at all. When they do this partial funding... well, wait. Let me rephrase.

I've been close to two federally-funded projects in which half or less than the amount requested from federal sources was granted. Both of the agencies in question were then put in the position of having to decide whether to forge ahead or drop the project altogether. Sometimes there are time limits associated with those funds - "Pull this off within 12 months or risk having Uncle Sam take the money back." If the organization hasn't secured funding for the rest of the project, they simply can't proceed. The congressman still gets to brag that he got funding for his state, even if the project doesn't happen.

I can't fault anyone for asking for federal funding for their town or their state. It's there, it's a competitive process, and you might as well compete for it with everyone else. The positive side of things is that regions of the country that don't have the local tax base to pull off some speical projects have a shot at the pot. The negative side is that the way to bend the ear of a congressman is through a lobbyist, and if you don't have a high-powered, expensive one, you aren't as likely to be on their radar.

You are so right....cinched by Obama/Biden ticket, not a doubt in my mind!!!!

And, although I am not a democrat, I do not feel that dems or independents are at all threatened by the ticket. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, when they named Palin an already strong very strong Dem ticket got even stronger while McCain's ticket got weaker. We will see at the polls, and I know I won't be the one backpedaling in my statements!
