Doesn't sound like James Taylor to me. Who is this, really? Do you know, OP?

Sounds like James Taylor to me. He was at the convention in Denver so even if it turns out to be a sound-a-like, I doubt Senator Obama will be hearing from his lawyer as has been the case with the McCain camp about a half dozen times in the last few months.

Why would you think anyone could possibly hear from a lawyer on this? I don't believe the person singing is even claiming to be, or trying to sound like James Taylor.

I'm a huge JT fan. This isn't Baby James...

Gosh, slow your roll -- my point was, even if it isn't James Taylor, the Obama camp likely has his blessings to use an artist with a similar style.

Ummm, (trying to slow down for you...pausing first) Is this something you believe... (another pause) that they need JT's blessings to play a song in his genre?

Hmmm - I think this discussion has gone nowhere, to be truthful...

Back on topic - I would like to know who sang that song. It's cute!

Music is copyrighted. It is not to be used without the artist's permission. The McCain campaign started with an ad using a song from John Mellencamp without permission. Mellencamp let him know that he has always been anti war and it's best that they not associate him with the McCain campaign. McCain also got a cease and desist from Mike Myers (clip from Wayne's World), Jackson Brown (Running on Empty), Frankie Valli (You're just too good to be true), and, most recently from Heart (Barracuda).

That's why there was a reference to attorneys. What the McCain campaign is doing is illegal. I guess he'll try stealing something from Stephen Stills or U2 next.

This is a spoof...

Kind of like what Weird Al does, only it's in a political campaign.

Unless JT was the author of the actual music he's got no beef.

It's not JT, but a sound alike.

And FWIW, that song is not originally JT's.

The McCain campaign played Barracuda at the end of an event today. I don't know why they keep doing this but the Wilson sisters are not going to be happy.

According to the "McCain camp said last week that it had paid for and obtained all necessary licenses before using the song."

If the Wilson sisters (aka Heart) didn't write the song, they have no say so as to how the song is used. The composer of the song or whoever has the "rights" to the song, is the one that needs to ok the use of the song

Edited to add....OK, according to Wikipedia (take that with a grain of salt) the Wilson Sisters are co-writers along with band member Roger Fisher. So I have no clue who has the say-so here...lol
"Barracuda" was played at the 2008 Republican National Convention in reference to McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, who was known as "Sarah Barracuda" as a high school basketball star. The Wilson sisters disapproved, claiming that they disagreed with Palin's politics,[3] and sent a cease-and-desist letter to John McCain's campaign. [4] Song co-writer Roger Fisher announced he was "thrilled" with the RNC's use of the song, both because it generated royalties and because it gave him and other band-members an opportunity to voice their support for Barack Obama.[5] Even after Heart expressed their desire that McCain stop using their song, the McCain campaign continued using it, noting that they were paying all licensing fees.[6]

He cannot use this song without the permission of the Wilson sisters. They have expressed their opposition and delivered a cease and desist order. Here's another Republican who regards himself as above the law.

McCain And Palin Still Using Heart's 'Barracuda' - News Story | Music, Celebrity, Artist News | MTV News

"The Republican Party did in fact obtain the necessary license to use the song, which can be played when a venue pays a blanket fee to ASCAP, the organization that protects music copyrights."

Legally they can still play the song.

From the same link.

"While the Wilsons are clearly upset, "Barracuda" co-writer and former Heart guitarist Roger Fisher (Nancy's ex) has a different outlook. He's happy to receive the publicity, he told Reuters last week, and he pledged to give part of the royalties from the song's use to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign."

Thanks McCain for the contribution to Obama's campaign.

Seriously why would McCain even want to use a song which the writers/singers of said song don't want him to use? Why are they having problems finding songs to use that the writers/singers will approve? Why not ask them first?
