McCain takes lead in National Poll

Now that the two party conventions are over, it appears that the debate over which candidate would receive the bigger bounce has been settled.

John McCain's announcement of surprise-pick Sarah Palin largely stepped on Barack Obama's post-convention coverage, and Palin's stellar address -- and public unveiling -- last Wednesday, helped generate an enthusiasm for the ticket among Republicans and solidify a positive convention for the GOP.

Early indications suggest that Palin power has turned the race upside down. McCain has leaped to the lead in a new USA Today/Gallup national poll. A brand new CNN/Opinion Research Center poll released moments ago, confirmed the USA Today/Gallup results. Among registered voters, Obama and McCain were knotted at 48 percent.

The survey shows McCain at 50 percent and Obama at 46 percent among registered voters -- the first time since an early January USA Today/Gallup survey that the Republican was at the critical 50 percent mark.

Among those most likely to vote the gap was even broader with McCain leading Obama 54 percent to 44 percent.

Always has a leap in numbers after a convention. I am not at all worried. Happy to see you lull yourself into a false sense of security. We will know the truth the night of elections (although I already know that the informed public wants no more of the same stuff we have been dealing with for the last 8 years and will vote in Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden)

I don't know about that. If you look at Pollster you can see that Obama had been hovering in the upper 40's since Aug. and McCain was hovering in the lower 40's. Now Obama slid to 44 and McCain is sitting at 54. I think some of those undecided voters are starting to make up their minds.

Here's another interesting site. It shows how this is all playing out in the electoral vote. McCain is gaining ground here too. He has picked up Ohio, with their whopping 20 votes, and Virginia, with 13 since I last checked. Obama picked up Colorado with 9.

Oh, and I'm so glad to know you lefties aren't 'worried' because you sure talk like you are!!

Yep, Obama picked up 4 points after the DNC, but he has lost those now.

I don't know about the posters on here, but you can bet the Obama camp is worried.

Not worried at all. But I will say when the Dems were ahead in the polls Reps were also saying polls don't mean much soooo..........
I don't put any faith in ANY polls. I've NEVER been involved in any polls so it's interesting to think so many put any faith in it. They sure don't involve too many people in polls so how can the possibly be accurate for EITHER party?

Are you serious? If polls were meaningless, nobody would waste all the money and time it takes to do them. I'm sorry if you were never involved with one, but that doesn't mean that they are insignificant. And the statement that "They sure don't involve too many people in polls so how can the possibly be accurate for EITHER party?" is laughable! Any poll, worth it's wait, is done scientifically and with statistical significance. You can be sure that applies to Gallup.

If it is in fact his convention bounce, it is over twice as big as Obama's 4 pt. convention bounce. We will see.
