I don't think I would pull my child out of school for that. No matter who the candidate is.

And, I'm sure you son is an honor student that gets straight A's or whatever, but I still would not pull him out of school to see a political candidate.

I don't see where she said she was pulling him out of school. For me, personally, I couldn't get excited over seeing a political candidate and wouldn't necessarily walk across the street to see one, much less take a short trip.

kind of hard to not be top of your class when you are the only one in the class.....

Really rather scarey that they will let any parent homeschool with out any sort of certifications or validations that the parent has the knowledge or the ability to gain the knowledge.

but back to topic: It's very important to see your idols before they die. So, since McCain is neither my idol or someone I even remotely have the desire to hear speak, I wouldn't cross the street to see him. Have a safe and joyful trip. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll pass by a Planned Parenthood or some other clinic that provides abortions and you can teach your son the fine art of harassment.

Have a great time Kathy!! I would love to see them.

off topic....

I homeschooled most of my children's school career. I have no certifications or validations....unless you consider the fact that I gave birth to them and am responsible for them a validation. I am sure there are parents out there that have no business homeschooling, but I would also suggest that those people should probably not have been parents. This is a topic close to my heart..... and by the way...I would have rather my children go uneducated than to be influenced by their peers and the public school system. My dd is very close to getting her psychology degree and my ds just enrolled in community college. They are educated and are continuing their edcation.

back to your regulary scheduled program...............

ps...I would NEVER want to do it again...lol

He got a 34 on his ACT marilyn. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. He only homeschooled his junior year and now this year. And you do need certification or supervision in this state.
See your idols before they die? That's mighty cynical.
And actually taking someone to a political rally who is interested in politics is actually quite educational. It beats reading a book.
Too bad so many people have to post negative thoughts on here. Do I care if any of you don't want to see him? NADA But maybe people who support McCain would be interested. Keep your negatives to yourself please.

Yes, this IS KTS's Board don't you know. And you are only allowed to post what she likes to hear. But, just put a "I was just testing you" or an "lol" after everything and then you don't have to answer for anything you post. But be sure to ask KTS's permission first......

Sounds like fun! I was going to see Sarah this past Saturday here in Anchorage but we didn't get up early enough to run through the Secret Service gauntlet. I think it's great to take kids to things like that. I would have no problem taking my kids out of school for a day to experience a speech from presidential (or vp) candiate. It exposes them to politics and history in the making.

Would you feel the same way if the person speaking was Hillary or Bill Clinton, or Mr. Biden or Obama?

There are a few people that even though I don't agree with their politics I would go see simply because they are/were dynamic speakers. For example, I would go see Sarah Palin speak. I find her interesting and a very good speaker (not a big fan of her platform though). I don't think I'd go see Obama though. I missed seeing Bill Clinton when he came through here during Hill's campaign. He was running late, line was long and security was a booger.

I love to watch TD Jakes preach--don't always agree with his message but he is mesmerizing and fun to watch.

I saw John Kennedy up close and personal when he was running for president. I wouldn't trade that experience for anyting.
Enjoy your trip.

Somebody write this moment down, but I am going to defend Kathy on this one.

I've been lucky enough to see Cater, Reagan, Mondale, Original Bush, Dole and Kemp, Clinton, Gore, Hillary, Obama (when running for Senator), Kerry, and Justices Ginsburg and Scalia -- and a lot of them when I was middle-school age into college.

The opportunity to witness American politics at work is just as valuable, if not more, that reading about it in a textbook or watching it on TV.

Kathy - I hope you and your son have a wonderful time and it encouages him to want to learn more about the process.

That's very cool, Kathy.

The only president I ever got to see was Clinton. I didn't get to hear him speak, just driving by and waving, lol! He was here in Seattle for some kind of summit. It's always fun to see someone in real life that we normally only get to see on tv.

I hope you and your son have a great time. Get pics!

Honestly? You got to give respect to get it. I've tried respecting KTS. I've tried explaining to her in a calm, concise, succint manner my position and/or my issue with what she has said. I've even gone so far as to defend her on occasion---Only to have to continue to post in her same old "style". Her style shows no respect for anyone that doesn't agree with her. When she shows other people and their opinions respect, I will show her the same respect--until she time, when she posts something I don't agree with, I will post in whatever manner I feel!

I don't agree w/ all of TraciLM's opinions--but not once has she ever posted in a disrespectful manner.
I don't agree w/ Allinagust's opinions--but not once has she been disrespectful to anyone.

I agree a lot w/ Truble's opinions, but she has been disrespectful at times, and I have and always will comment on it when she is--same goes for Jaded.

so, in conclusion, if you behave respectfully in conversation with me, then I will return the "favor" and treat you with respect.

My oldest did go see Bill Clinton when he was here quite a long time ago. He shook his hand. This was probably about 11 or 12 years ago.

Regardless of what your political leanings are--Bill Clinton is an awesome public speaker. He's very engaging to the crowd.

I'm a bit spoiled--a lot of our public officials here in Montana are always out in the public. I've stood in line at Wal-Mart, and the DMV w/ Sen. Jon Testor, shared a plane ride w/ Sen. Max Baucus, at BBQ w/ Lt. Gov. Bollinger, and met and talked w/ Gov. Bryan Schweitzer numerous times (this man walks to work--with his dog, and no security detail on a regular basis). But I would still love to see Hillary and/or Bill. I'd like to hear Sarah Palin speak ( I think I'd like her on a personal level--I just don't like her politics). And there's not enough money in the world for me to sit through a speech by the current President.

The current president spoke at my son's commissioning and I have a picture of my son and him waving at us when DS got his degree. I don't remember the speech being very inspiring or anything but it was hot in Annapolis and we were excited so that could be why.

I would love to see anyone running for President speak because of the history of it all. Once.

I don't think George has been a very good speaker. I support our President but I have to admit that he sometimes sounds like a dufuss! lol Like when they make fun of him on MAD tv or SNL it seems close to the truth! lol
I did talk to my 84 yr old mom last night about us going to see McCain/Palin. We started talking about when my oldest saw Clinton and we were wondering if that was around the time he and Monica were having their little "fun times". lol So speaking isn't all that!!!!

Same here.....I got goose bumps just watching Air Force One take off in Honolulu. It was at night, and it was SOOO cool, the US Flag was illuminated on the tale of the plane. I am known to tear up at the National Anthem, too

Just imagining that scene makes me want to tear up! Sounds beautiful. We watched Air Force One take off from here after Bush came to view the flood damage. It was cool!

I agree completely, and frankly that is one of the things I love about him. He's like me, saying whatever, and sometimes stumbling on his words and making jokes Probably not the best thing for a President to do, but, hey, the writers get a lot of mileage out of his speeches

I especially love the part on Letterman "Great moments in Presidential Speeches" I think whoever is in the White House next will surely provide more fodder for the talk show hosts.

We came SO close to getting a tour of Air Force One several years ago, but one of Gore's parents died, at least if I remember correctly that was the reason, so our tour was canceled. We had a friend who was on AFO security, can't remember what his title was. But we got some AFO memorabilia, which came in handy on the way home, because we got lost and we were hungry. mmmm AFO m&m's!! lol

at one time, we had a family friend who was a member of Bush Sr.'s honor guard (the ones you see saluting as the President comes off of AF One.) My sister was fortunate enough to get a "special" tour of DC, The White House and grounds, as well as AF One. She said it was very neat.

That must have been what our friend was, part of the honor guard, because I think that was part of his job as well. We were pretty bummed we didn't get the tour, our kids were so excited...oh well. It had something to do with AFO having no tours a certain amount of hours before it flew or something.

We have lots of fun stories from that trip. We had a dualie with a tank on the back for fuel at the time.........try going anywhere in DC in a vehicle like that after 9-11 especially. (We pulled a fifth wheel with it and it was DH's work truck)
We actually got pulled over by security near the Pentagon and they ran DH's info. We had NO idea we were near the Pentagon, until we noticed while we waited for them to let us go. It was scary, they said if we didn't go the right way we would be stopped again and it would not be good. THEN we got lost in DC and everytime I thought we were anywhere NEAR the White House I would freak out!!! Apparently when it say "no trucks" on the highways around there, they don't just mean semis!!

I will bet Bill Clinton is an inspiring speaker in person. He is charismatic. I think that Obama has some of those characteristics in his speaking as well. My opinion, of course and I am biased. McCain is not inspiring but I did find myself listening intently to Palin when she spoke and I found the same things in her speech...she was engaging and interesting though caustic and sarcastic which are some things I do not find attractive in a speech of that kind. I am sure though that if I had the chance to hear her in person, I would jump on it because I love politics.

I would have no problem at all taking my child out of school for the event. It's a first hand opportunity for the child to see the election process in action and learn. I think it's an educational experience and would be a more valuable one than just reading about it in a classroom.

I hope you post pictures!
