McCain on Spain

I am pretty sure that he was confused when he answered. The reporter had just asked him about Venezuela and Bolivia, then Spain: "a reporter asked McCain whether, if elected, he would receive Zapatero in the White House. McCain answered, "Honestly, I have to analyze our relationships, situations, and priorities, but I can assure you that I will establish closer relationships with our friends, and I will stand up to those who want to harm the United States." After trying to clarify that Spain is in Europe, she got: "What I would say is that my record is that of someone who has worked in a friendly atmosphere with those who are our friends and faced up to those who aren't."

This makes no sense to me. He had to have been confused. His campaign said today that McCain meant what he said. I think they chose to protect McCain's image rather than correct an offense to a NATO ally.

I'd have to see the actual tape. He does say "I will establish closer relationships with our friends, and I will stand up to those who want to harm the United States." With just that, I would assume he was talking about Spain when he said "our friends" because I know Spain is an ally. He never implies which one Spain is though. Is there a video?

John McCain is smart. I can't imagine what he meant to say but I have to think it was a mistake and then they didn't want to admit that it might have been a "misspoken" KWIM?

I can't believe that he didn't know what the answer to the question so that is the only answer. Poor guy. Maybe he was tired and caught off guard and that is all he could think to say. Then once he said it, he couldn't think of how to unsay it.

Thanks. . .in all honestly it didn't sound like much of a mistake to me. Am I wrong? Doesn't McCain have poor hearing? He wears hearing aids doesn't he?

ETA: The reason I'm asking is because I didn't understand who she said the first time. She spoke kinda fast and more in a Spanish pronunciation. Do you think he didn't understand her and was just kind of covering his ass?

I just listened to the interview. I could hardly understand the woman who was doing the interview. She spoke with such a heavy foreign accent and she spoke so quickly, maybe he just couldn't understand what she was saying!
