Red Star Symbolism - this is starting to get scarey

My coffee maker died today. So, I went out to find a new one. Imagine my horror to find this

Everywhere I went, this is what I saw

Holy Cow - they are in on it too. Maybe those parades have just been slowly indoctrinating me; I had no idea. I guess I bettter go buy a copy of Mein Kampf before Borders sells out.

OMG !!!

I have a large choice of gas stations where I live, so I can boycott Texico no problem; but, Heineken? - Say it ain't so, Joe.

There must be some subversive symbolism using green. There is green T in the Texico star and the red Heineken star is in a green field. Oh, what could it mean? WHAT COULD IT MEAN!!!!

Lets see, home goods, clothes, gasoline (those darn AAAA-Rabs again), and beer. All things that will destroy our American way of life if in the wrong hands ................. Heaven help us

You think it's funny but Heinekin was actually sued in Hungary over their use of the red star.

Jozsef Palinkas, a former Hungarian government education minister, said the use of the red star was an insult to Hungarians who fought communism. "Behind the Iron Curtain we saw the red star not on beer bottles, but on tanks," he said.

Heineken said the symbol had no connection to communism. A spokesperson said that the red star was used as a symbol by European brewers in the Middle Ages. After World War II, Heineken switched to a white star with red outline, to avoid any link with communism. But in the mid-1990s, after the collapse of Communism in Europe, the company switched back.

As somebody who's undergraduate degree is in Soviet studies, I find it pretty disgusting that you are all making light of Communism and the effect it has had on people. You think it's funny that millions were killed, exiled to Siberia where they died of starvation? The repression of ethnic minorities? The Great Purge leading to the death of 2 million people?

Ayres gleeflully sporting the red star on his t-shirt is akin to me wearing a swastika on mine.

I'm surprised that liberals who supposedly care about the human rights of others would find humor in the autracities of communism.

Why the big fuss about Ayres displaying his red star when all it symbolizes is the death and repression of millions of people?

I fully understand that the red star probably means nothing to most Americans, and the fact that it is displayed on many logos here is insignificant. But it doesn't diminish in any way how Ayres knowingly wears it and what it represents to millions of people worldwide.

But carry on. . .North Koreans resorting to canalbalism is funny. . .necklaces in Cuba. . .hilarious! The killing fields of Cambodia were a hoot!!!

I find it disgusting that the original poster on this subject posted this to show that Senator Obama was socialist or communist solely because of the red stars on his posters, bumperstickers, etc. BUT ignores the fact that McCain uses the same red star on his campaign materials. I think we all found it asinine that the red star issue for Senator Obama is so far-fetched as some kind of subliminal message to try and indoctrinate us all. Nobody is trying to diminish the fact that the red star could have been used as symbolism in other areas----just the idiocy that Senator Obama was using it in his campaign to spread socialism or communism. As a matter of fact... even YOU responded with an "LOL" to the original post....so to come here and try to shame others for the same light way you responded is ludicrous.

Nope. . .just an innocent mistake. Keep reading the same thread. I hadn't ever noticed it until it was pointed out by the OP. Once somebody pointed out that it is also on McCain's stuff I admitted my folly by pointing out that we are all screwed, LOL. I was making light of the fact that I hadn't ever noticed it on either's stuff and that obviously the assumption that it meant somehow that Obama was a communist was unfounded. I don't think it being on Obama's stuff means anything. . .excepted initially saying I wonder why they haven't asked for it to be removed.

That being said, I think Ayres wearing it on his t-shirt has definite meaning. He knows full well what it means. And now it seems to be the hillarity of the board and has "no" meaning what so ever. That I do have a problem with. It means plenty to a good number of people. And to continue to make light of it is callous.

I think it's fascinating the way you "know" why Ayres wore the red star. I guess you have a mind meld with him or something. Must be really cool to be you and "know" things that way.

Ebay gives a red star for buyers and sellers with feedback between 1000-4999. The socialists are everywhere. They're everywhere.

I agree. Very disgusting to make light of something like this. I guess a lot of people on these boards are too young to remember or weren't taught in school what these symbols actually mean. Perhaps some of you need to read some old history books to acquaint yourselves with symbolism and maybe you wouldn't be so quick to make light and inappropriate jokes.

Actually, it looks like a t-shirt that my husband has hanging in his closet. From a "Rage Against the Machine" concert he went to, the red star shows up on their merchandise a lot.

It very well could be an EZLN shirt - which is a libertarian socialism group in Mexico.

Or, it could just be a t-shirt that looks cool under a black jacket.

Such drama.

Symbolism only means what it is intended to mean. I doubt Macys, Adidas or ebay had anything in mind other than a logo for their items. As far the link in the other thread to a site selling Democratic merchandise, it is not affiliated with Obama in any way. If you check the store on the real Obama website, you will not find merchandise with a red star.

This is the kind of crap that made me change from being a staunch Republican ( I was a Young Republican in College) and vote Democrat. The conservative base is based on fear. Fear of a Muslim, Fear of an Arab, fear of communism....it is how GWB got into office the second time. Using the fact that we haven't had another attack on US soil but if we hadn't elected him we most certainly would have...

Fear is a motivator for sure but we can't be governed by fear. We have to look forward to what is ahead and not be afraid. I think that is what resonates with me on choosing a party platform that does not try and scare me into voting for them.

Ayers, "a washed up terrorist", ACORN (ruining the very fabric or something like that), making people afraid of people who don't look like them, socialism, are all scare tactics to make people afraid.

And then we have this communism thing in this thread. Silly.

Like a few years ago, or maybe more than a few years ago, Proctor and Gamble had to go on the record about their logo because someone saw devil worship or satanism or something like this star thing in it and it spread like wildfire. This is the same thing.

It is depressing that so many people buy into it.

Yeah, I expect to hear more things that will make me shake my head in the next week or so as the race comes to its logical conclusion as Obama gathers more and more electoral votes.

Have they always been this way? Or has it got worse over the past few years? I know my husbands Uncle is voting for Mccain and he has stated some of the smears that have been floating around.

Wink

I will just say as always time for big change, time for Bush to go time for the Republicans to go. Time to bring our great country back on her feet. On the only way we can accomplish this is by way of Obama/Biden which will happen... Catherine only 8 more days to victory for us Americans who have long suffered under the crippling Bush/Cheney Administration....

Did we mention Red Star Yeast?

That was my youth, folks. It wasn't Macy's. It was my mom making bread, using Red Star Yeast.

I think it is worse now because of the internet. There have always been smears in campaigns but there wasn't any way to get them around the world in a hurry so not everyone knew about them KWIM? With the advent of the internet, someone can send an e mail around and everyone who recieves it has an opportunity to believe it.

And that's what the McCain smear machine is counting on. Hopefully it wont work this time. I did hear on MSNBC last night that one of the pacs has now trotted out Rev. Wright. I knew it was just a matter of time if they were still losing this close to the election. I also know a lot here are probably clapping their hands because this is what they have wanted them to do. I think only the extreme right will believe the smears and they weren't voting for Obama anyway.

DH went to early voting yesterday.(I did it last week). He said there was a line and it was mostly young college age and all the conversations he overheard were pro Obama so that is a good sign. He wouldn't take the info from the Democratic person (50 ft. way from the polling place) so I teased him that she probably thought he was a Repub. He already had his cheat sheet I made him of the liberal judges so he told her he already had his list.
