No Candy for You

What a shrew.

Boo! Supporting Obama? No treats for you
Mich. woman shares sweets with only those who back McCain, Palin
The Associated Press
updated 7:43 p.m. ET, Sat., Nov. 1, 2008
GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. - A woman refused Halloween candy to children whose parents support Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Shirley Nagel passed out candy Friday on the scary U.S. holiday, but only to those who shared her support for Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his vice presidential pick Sarah Palin.

Television station WJBK reported that a sign posted outside Nagel's house in suburban Detroit served this notice to children seeking treats: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters."

Nagel told WJBK that "Obama's scary." When asked about children who were turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh well. Everybody has a choice."

Last I checked, Halloween didn't require mandatory participation. If the old witch didn't want to hand out candy to Obama supporters, that's certainly her right. I think it was incredibly rude, however, well within her rights as a private citizen.

"children who were turned away empty-handed and crying" - give me a break - those kids probably didn't think twice and ran on to the next house.

I agree w/ Traci - It was rude and I'll guarantee there was some kind of TP-ing or eggs thrown at her home...but if she wants to do it it's her right.

Nice...I'm sure a 6 year old that is trick-or-treating knows so much about McCain and Obama. I think if you asked most of the younger kids at my school (K-2) who McCain or Obama was....they would say WHO????

I agree, it's her right, but how bitchy...these are children we're talking about...not their parents.

Of course it's her right -- and it's our right to mock her. Typical small-minded, mean-spirited Republicanism. I bet she thinks Palin hung the moon.

How the hell did she know who the parents supported?
Why would any parent who did support Obama, subject their child to some wacked-out, bitter, nut-job?

Really odd story....wonder if the reporter/writer actually witnessed children running away crying?

Maybe it's a small enough area that people actually know each other. I know who about half of my neighbors support, because of bumper stickers and yard signs.

It is only an example of one person. It is not reflective of the party's candidate.

Now if it had been that either Senators McCain or Obama didn't give candy to those with opposite party affiliations, then it might have been fodder for way back on page D12.

This is the kind of drivel that has nothing to do with the real issues.

Only because she was a Republican/McCain supporter.....you KNOW if a Senator Obama supporter had done the same thing you would not be dismissing it

I just hope that she had a big L on her forehead to designate her support.

No. This is exactly what I discussed. It is drivel. It makes no difference which party the woman supports. It has nothing to do with the issues, it has nothing to do with political points.

It wasn't worth the typing, it wasn't worth the posting. It has nothing to do with the candidates !

And yet you've taken the time to type out three responses so far.

I am glad you can count. That's nice. I stand by it. This is worthless and if anyone could be influenced by it, then they will at least scan if not read my point of it being worthless to each candidate.

One person's actions do not represent another.

btw, this makes four.

Four posts on drivel . . . interesting. Someone seems to feel the need to really address this issue.

Pardon my french but this woman needs to grow the hell up.

How petty and stupid can you be?

If I got TOT'ers I wouldn't give a rats hiney who their parents were voting for, there'd be candy for everybody.

I'm an Obama supporter but if this woman was doing this to kids whose parents were voting for McCain I'd feel exactly the same way.

Just what does she hope to accomplish from pulling a stunt like this?

Pathetic, just pathetic.

Last time I checked we lived in the United States of America. When I took my kids TOTing only about 1 out of 5 houses even had their porch lights on. She is in no way obligated to give anybody candy.

I see this as a perfect opportunity to teach your children exactly how a free society works. Not everyone is ever going to believe and support the same things. They have two choices:

1) Lie and tell her they and their parents support McCain, in order to support their own self interests.

2) Stand up for what they believe in, and tell her they are supporting Obama and they don't need her damn tootsie roll to begin with.

You all should be thanking her for the opportunity to teach your children an important lesson. What a sad world we would live in if everybody thought and believed the exact same things.

And I am POSITIVE that you would not be looking at this the same way had a Senator Obama supporter done this.
