Just wondering if anyone saved their newspaper for a keepsake??

Nope, but I still have lots of copies of the Bush/Al Gore fiasco, and how the papers printed that he won, then ones that had that he didn't win.. then they had recount as the final paper of the day. I literally stood outside of one of the paper machines here in town and just bought them up as he made three stops in one night..haha I have several copies of all three. I made a KILLING on yahoo auctions with those papers!!! |

Of course, I save anything in the paper that has to do with making great history for future generations to read. My parents saved the paper the day after Kennedy was shot, the day after Nixon resigned, the day after we went to war in the Middle East the first time and I saved the second time, the Bush fiasco papers, the day the wall went down, the days after 9/11. Things that in years to come my grandchildren and their children will want to see.

I don't know why I am surprised to find that most of you didn't see the significance of this being the first AA to be elected to major office and find it noteworthy to save the paper marking the event. I guess it was because I thought those parents who post here would want to explain to their children and be proud that though they themselves do not agree with his politics understand how far we as a country have come. To recognize the significance of this event does not mean you are being disloyal to John McCain or to the Republican Party. It is to recognize that we are all Americans and just fifty years ago, we could not drink out of the same water fountains. It is a momentous event in our history. Perhaps, you are not sentimental. Perhaps you are not a saver. But some of the postings about putting it on the bottom of the bird cage or usage as kitty litter or out with the trash says a great deal about what you think of this event even besides the political implications. Those aside, can you agree that this is an event that many (perhaps yourself) never thought or hoped would never come. It did and it is history. It is sad that you can't see that. Would you have saved the paper if the first woman was President? I could see not saving it if John McCain was elected as there have been many men who have been elected. This is evidence of how far Americans have come in seeing people as people. Our children will grow up and ask about it when they learn in history books about the first Black American to be elected President. In my home, I will be able to pull out a newspaper article with his picture on it and show them. My parents pulled out a newspaper that on the front page had a picture of Mrs. Kennedy with blood on her dress. My grandparents have a picture of Pearl Harbor I have seen. I am glad they do. It makes history come alive for me. |

My kids are grown, so they witnessed the election. Plus I remember cleaning out my parents' house after they died. My mom had saved the First Man on the Moon, Pres. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy being shot, lots of other papers. We found them in the attic. Know what happened to them? We looked at them and then they were tossed. We asked the grandkids (the older ones) if they wanted them for their kids and they said they didn't want them. I think the younger generations don't hoard things that other generations have. They don't want the clutter. |

Wow, quite the rant you went on..all high & mighty too.. Nope..I wouldn't have saved it had it been a woman president either, especially had it been Hillary. But nice try trying to paint it as a racist issue..AGAIN. That he is black is irrelevant to me, that I fear what his policies will do to our nation is relevant. Both of my daughters are old enough to vote and old enough to buy their own issues if they wanted one. Don't worry about history in this household, my daughters have been shown the love of history since they were toddlers...every summer we take a history type vacation, STILL do, can't even count how many times we've been to Gettysburg, Antietam, Williamsburg, Jamestown etc.. Enough inspiration that my youngest is majoring in History in college. Quote:

Yes I did save it. I also have the day of 9/11 attacks many papers from that. My parents have the day Kenneday was shot and the day the men landed on the moon. At my dd's high school they were giving out the papers the day after on 11/5 and then the next day some of the teachers were saying that those papers were selling on ebay for crazy prices.. I would rather keep all these important papers and would never trade them... Peace.. Catherine

You assume that a person did not save it because they are racist. I didn't save it because I've been one of those people who had to slog through enormous amounts of saved stuff when a relative died. Neat to look at some of it, but, in the grand scheme of things---MOST of that memoriablia (sp?) went into the trash too. All of this is going to continue to be about race....as long as someone makes it about race. You made this topic about race. No one but YOU!

Kolu I am not looking to start any trouble, but your end quote Taking Xanax as needed I know that was mean't for me and that truly was low. If you truly think having to take Xanax for panic attacks which millions of people suffer from everyday is a joke it is not and that was not funny.. For all posters I do not want this to turn into anything else but the original thread that was intended for and sorry for any inconviences If I came into this thread..Catherine

Oh puhleeeeze....... I do not have children. I am not spreading hate. I just don't keep lots of old newspapers hanging around collecting dust. We take a camera on vacation and never take a picture. I would be bored to tears doing all that scrapbooking stuff. You sure assume alot about people that you don't even know. Just because I didn't keep the newspaper and I am a Republican does not mean that I spew hate and don't like AA's. ![]() ![]() I did not vote for Obama because he is not conservative enough for me. I could care less if he was purple with pink polka dots...or even white. I would not have voted for him. Did you not vote for McCain because he is white?????????? Stupid question, isn't it????? I assume that you didn't vote for him because you did not agree with him. That's where we are different.Yes, maybe some people in this world who did not vote for Obama are racist, and that is sad, You need to get a grip and realize that everyone that does not agree with you is not racist. Geeeez!!!! If you have read very much on this board, you will see that I am hoping that the Republican Party rebuilds with with Bobby Jindal. I really like this guy...and guess what????? HE ISN"T WHITE!!!!!!!!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I could say more, but I won't. I don't want to make a bunch of assumtions. |

usnamom, What? You have got to be kidding me. I agree with the many here. WHY does this have to be a race issue? I didn't get a paper, because I didn't think of it. It wasn't THAT newsworthy to me. The color of his skin does NOT matter to me! I didn't vote for him because of the color of his skin. However, many who DID vote for him, did so just because of the color of his skin.. which is funny, because he really is only 1/2 African American.. he is also 1/2 Caucasian American. So, by your assumption, I really thought he was our new WHITE president!!!! Guess it's all in how you look at it. |

I would have bought the papers whoever won. This election changed history. If McCain would have won, he would have been the oldest elected president with a female vice president. I teach US history to fifth graders and they understood the difference of this election. I will buy the paper on Jan. 20 th since I live in the DC area. I plan on going to some of the swearing in events. My son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter are coming from Chicago to see the events.

I wonder how many that voted for McCain saved the paper? I don't think this is a race issue, per se, but perhaps more that you're more likely to see this election as a remarkable event if you supported the winning side rather than the losing side. I know that I wouldn't have thought twice about trying to get a paper if Palin were the first female VP-elect. I wouldn't have even tried, even though, IMO, that would have been just as remarkable as Obama's win.

I didn't save the paper, but then again, our local paper had no headline mentioning he won. It simply stated that McCain won the county and that they county split from the nation in their voting. |

I didn't rant. I stated my opinion. It wasn't about race and I don't turn every conversation about race. The fact is that this is the first AA to be elected President. It was worth mentioning and it was worth it to AIA to ask if anyone saved it. I answered the question. It didn't surprise me to see that some of the people save it. But it didn't surprise that some of you didn't. Not one bit. OhhGodd. I don't know where to begin with you. It isn't a race issue. It is the fact that if he was purple and pink polka dots and was the first of his kind to win the election, it would have been worth noting, do you not agree? Go back and read why he is not thought of as 1/2 white american. Then you might see how silly that statement is. Not how silly YOU are but how silly the STATEMENT is. You really think he is another white president? Okay. Okay. Marilyn, I am off the race statement. I did not make this about race. It is about race. Obama is the first black (race) president. You can't get away from it. I don't think it is a bad thing. Apparently, some people do. I don't put words in your mouth, please do not put them in mine. Kolu, I won't even dignify your post. Your eagerness to start something where something is not is craziness. Not every post I start is about race. No more than every post you post is about causing trouble. Wait, maybe it is. The important thing is that this new president is black. The first black president. It is noteworthy and will be written about in history books. Palin would have been the first woman VP if she had won. She didn't but she will be in the history books. I don't have a problem with it. And I will keep a copy of the paper of it. But that is just me. And that is the answer to the question that AIA asked. |

We are never going to agree on politics in any country. We all have different things that are important to us that affect how we vote.....just because we are all different. I don't happen to put all of my faith, hope, and trust in whoever is president. All good things in this country aren't just because of one man. All bad things that happen aren't because of one man. There is a lot more involved than just the guy sitting in the oval office. Maybe I just have a cynical view of all politicians. But, none of that was considered in your judgement of our statements.

And it had nothing to do with his political stances, it had to do with him being the first elected President of the US, Even if I had not voted for him, if Palin had won, I would have still kept the paper, because of the history it would have made. But that is my opinion and that is what was asked of me in the OP. HITLER> |

We elected a President. We do that about every 4 years or so, and have been for a long time. Yes, I do understand the significance of the fact that a black American was elected. But, I don't need a newspaper to know that or to even remember that! We're living history in this very moment. My children fully understand the significance of the event. But you know what? I think my youngest son said it best when he said: "He's black? Really?(heavy sarcasm...for an 8 y/o he's got sarcasm down to t fine art) What difference does it make if he can do the job? And if he can't do the job, then we'll elect someone else next time...." You see, he doesn't see color. He doesn't make that distinction! People are people . I didn't put words into your mouth--I didn't have to. Whether you realize it or not, your post insinuated and in places outright stated that you felt those who didn't save the paper just didn't care, or were racist.

We are all entitled to our opinion But, if you are going to insinuate that I am racist because I didn't keep the newspaper, I am not going to let that just fly. This in no way helps the racism in this country...it just makes it worse. Unfortantly, there will probably always be racism of some kind or in some kind of form. Not keeping a newspaper is not one of those forms. Most of the cases here in this thread are not because of racism. I did say most. |

I am not AA. I did save my paper. PE Obama will be written about forever. like Washington. He was the first AA President, not only that he is the first President Elect since 9/11, he is the President going into one of the worst finicial crisis since the Great Deppression. So he has made history in many ways. I think when people posted they jus threw the paper away, lined the bird cage or used the paper as kitty litter to some, the paper holds great importance to them, to you if might be just a paper, just as to some people our flag is just a flag(no I am not one of them)so when you state the things about the paper, it would be like saying something you hold near and dear, and someone said I threw it away, or toss some crap on it.

What if Obama being the first AA President actually makes racism worse? Because, like MANY others, I could care less what the color of his skin is, when considering him, it doesn't even factor in. It's the liberal policies. But, some are making it about his race. Like someone else said, you can't have it both ways.

Usnamom, I understand this paper holds some significance to you. I can feel the passion you have for this new President and what it stands for. Yes, you are right. This is a historic event. For so many reasons.. as noted in another post. I hope that you have many copies of the paper, and that you have them for years to come to reflect upon. I wish I had bought some...I would offer them to you to add to your collection. |

Sadly all of this should never ever be about a race issue, but rather us a nation coming together. As I have always stated the late Dr.Martin Luther KIng, that a man should not be judged by the color of his skin but that rather the content of his character, which I personally feel at this time McCain and Obama have both shown in so many way...Yes I did vote for Barack Obama and while I also feel its proud moment for many people, because we have elected our first AA, president, however I did not vote for you because he was black, I am white . I voted for him because I am a democrat and because I wanted a change plain and simple..So sad that it has come down to a racist issue and truly wish we could all move forward to a peaceful nation and unite as one. Sadly I personally do not feel this will happen for many people... Peace... CAtherine
