I would be careful before I placed a note on someone's car. You never know who you are going to encounter.

I sent for these post-its. However...You really do need to be careful what car you leave this on. I just had a kidney transplant and look "healthy" The thing is I am recovering from major surgery and I have a cardiac condition. I have had people say some things to me. I may look healthy from appearance but I am certainly not. I do see people take advantage of these parking spaces frequently..for example...not having the handicapped person with you but using their card. Just not right!! OK I am done rambling. lol

Be careful...yes. However, if someone doesn't report it, the behavior will only continue. I'M the kind of person that takes the plate # down, and sends a little note to our local cop shop....parking in a fire lane, not stopping at a sign...passing a school bus while the STOP sign is out.....ummmmm...

.......I once called the 1-800-How's my driving number. But before I could call, I had to write down the number (pre cell phone days). The driver saw what I was doing and was angry. He began to throw lit matches at my car. The guy was so dumb that the matches would burn out before they flew behind his truck, and onto my car. Whatta loser. I ended up writing down the offramp #, plate #, and time. Then I called when I got home...oooh that dude was in a heap of trouble.

I don't like this either. There are plenty of people (including myself) who are disabled but I look healthy. Some days I can get around great; others I can't.

I think people should mind their own business!!!

Then those of you who are disabled and have a tag or have the sign hanging from your rearview mirror should not have a problem with this. But i think its a good idea.I have arthritis and my left foot bone is bent from a chidhood disorder and it really peeves me when someone is in one of those spaces and can walk "better" than i and i have times i can hardly walk but have not gone to get a tag.I won't unless i "have" too. There are people out there who are worse off than me and they need the spaces more than i.A couple days ago i saw a healthy young man in an expensive sports car at Sam's Club parked in one of those spaces.I would have popped one of those stickers on his car in a minute. :-) And YES he was NOT disabled...visibly anyway. :-)
NO people should NOT mind their own business. Its illegal to do that.Would you look the other way if someone was being mugged and say"I'm minding my own business" ?

My thing is if you don't have a handicapped plate or tag then you aren't doing it legally... so you DESERVE one of those!~

Who would have thought that something on the freebies board would be so controversial? I thought that was only in The Cafe!!!! lol
I read a little from the site and the owner created it because of certain personal experiences with handicapped family and the abuse of handicapped tags.
I also agree with many of you that someone may not "look" handicapped but has a need for a handicap tag.
I am such a non-conforntational person that I would be very worried that someone might see me putting a post it on their car and start an argument or worse!
But I think that this is an interesting idea to bring awarness about fraudulant tags and make those who are abusing the system and breaking laws accountable.

I hope I didn't start/add to something.
BTW I'm NOT handicapped...but I will try to do what I can for those who are. I know how I would feel if I needed that spot, and it was not available because someone 'just ran in for a second.'

Now....where are the "It is too &%$#@! hot for your dog to be in the car" Post-its?

or the..."Did they forget to install a turn signal on your vehicle" Post-its?

or....."Are you joking? Leaving your kids in the car, unattended" Post-its...

Ohhhhh I could go on all day....

I get so mad when I see people park in handicap spots WITHOUT a tag. I would not say anything if the person had a tag, no matter how healthy they appeared. BUT if they are doing it without a tag, then it's not legal whether they are handicapped or not and they are taking that spot from someone who legally needs it.

I will send away from these (thanks op) though I don't know if I will have the guts to use them because you are right, you don't know who you are going to encounter.

I look healthy too, until you check under the hood. I won't go into the laundry list, but it starts with MS and goes downhill from there; I have a handicapped tag because there are days when I definitely need it. What really gets me are the jack***es who park in the striped strips between the handicapped spots. Those aren't parking spaces, folks; they're for wheelchair ramps! I can understand leaving shopping carts there; if you're not up to walking far, taking one to a cart return can be tough. Parking the car in space left so someone can get an electric wheelchair back into his/her van .... grrrrr.... I've never seen a car without the tags parked in the actual space, but plenty of idiots park in the ramp space.

I say as long as they have a tag or plate, leave it be. There are times that I am with my gran. She has a tag, I won't even park in those spots unless she is getting out of the car also. If I am just running in for her, I will park further away.

My friend got her permanent tag a few months ago. The thing is that most of the time she looks fine when she is walking in, but the more energy she uses in the store, the less she has for the rest of her day. She may look totally healthy most days (36 years old and thin), but she is definately not. Even her "good days" don't always last long. I would hate to think that on top of all she is dealing with in her life that someone one would judge her and even say something. The only reason she can walk at all is due to a Neuro Stimulator implanted in her spine and thru medication.

BTW I love all the other post it ideas. Good topic for the Cafe board! How about the "You had to go around me, and cut me off, but we still got here at the same time" post it!

Just my thoughts. I went to that site where I saw people's tag numbers being posted, which I don't think solves anything. If you really want to make a difference, call the police right then and there when you see the car parked illegally so that they can come out and give the person a ticket. I was told by the police that NO TICKET is issued unless the police see the offense themselves....which makes sense if you think about it. I could be a jealous ex-girlfriend calling from my living room saying that I am seeing a car parked illegally, speeding, etc, just to try and get revenge. My advice is that if you want to make a difference, allow the police to see the offense for themselves rather than to post their information online which really doesn't do anything and that person may never even know his information is posted online anyway.

BTW, people who are DEAF and those who are visually impaired also qualify for disabled parking tags. Yes, Deaf people do drive.....visually impaired people shouldn't be driving, but too many do. But they are often granted disabled parking tags for the benefit of those driving for them in their vehicle. I spent over 8 years working with people who are Deaf and visually impaired, so I am speaking from years of experience. My point is that you cannot say someone "looks" handicapped or doesn't.

Why would a deaf person or a visually impaired person need to park closer to a store?????? How does either disability impair them from walking a long distance which is what these are for??? If you cannot see to get into the store-do you need to be driving??? My next door neighbors are both deaf and neither would ever get one of these tags. They are capable of walking just fine. I think they should do away with the temporary tags where the abuse occurs. If you are driving your grandmother somewhere-drop her off at the door. It does not give you the right to park in the handicap spot. Now if she is driving her car, with her permanent handicapped tags then fine she can park there. My neighbor had neck surgery 8 years ago, has been employed as a mechanic for a national airlines and works full time, yet he has a tag that he is able to renew. He uses it at things like airport parking and major sporting events just to get better parking. In TX here over the Christmas break, they handed out 25 tickets at 1 Mall on 1 day for people with tags parking in Hspaces-but they were not the people listed on the tag. For everyone who says they get weaker while they shop-should you really be driving a car at that time either??? I believe that if they just did away with the hanging tags-or make them last no more than 3 weeks, that there would not be as much abuse. Force people to get a real permanent, non transferrable tag would help.

Wow, I am surprised at some of you very judgemental people. Be grateful you are healthy and don't need a handicapped sticker. To the poster above who suggested dropping your elderly grandmother off at the door. What if your elderly grandmother has trouble walking or standing on her own? You also suggested to those who get weaker when they shop...you question whether they should be driving. I'm hoping you are just uninformed, rather than cruel, which is how you come across. I have congestive heart failure and rheumatoid arthritis. I live in constant pain and have fatigue most of the time. I often use my handicapped placard when I am not feeling great, but still need to get out of the house to buy things, or just to be out in the world. It can be very depressing to have a chronic illness. To be judged by those like you and others on this board is hurtful. If you ever become seriously ill, hurt, or in need of compassion, I hope you are treated with the same sensitivity that you show others. Only THEN will you realize how cruel your words really are. (There but for the grace of God....)
btw, the only way I can see anyone using these stickies is if someone parks in a handicapped spot that does not have the tag or placard. Otherwise, it might be wise to withhold judgment. There are many people out there who "appear" to be healthy, but have invisible illnesses. And for those who "would never use a placard no matter how disabled they were".....guess what, no one will give you a gold star for being a martyr. If you choose to not use something you are entitled to, so be it. It doesn't make you "better than" those of us who use it. Don't judge those of us who DO need the placard and use it responsibly. I am grateful no one has questioned me using my placard. I would be mortified if someone were to say something. I don't feel I need to justify to anyone what my health issues are and why I'm using a placard.

Well for starters, I did not say that visually impaired people would be driving. Have you ever tried to help guide a blind person with one arm while carrying packages with the other? Try bringing a large package FROM the car to the store which requires both hands and guiding a person who is visually impaired which also requires an arm. I have been in that position numerous times and was glad that the person had a handicapped tag because it minimized how far we had to walk with that burden. It's very difficult to carry large or several packages while guiding someone and at the same time ensure the safety of hte person and being sure that you don't drop and break the packages.

Not everyone who is visually impaired or Deaf has a handicapped tag or wants one. Imagine for a moment however that you woke up tomorrow and could not hear. During the adjustment of losing one of your senses, you would probably be grateful not to have to walk a long distance in a parking lot. It may not sound like a big deal to lose your hearing, but it really is. You'd have to learn to depend upon your other sense and the loss of any one of your sense requires a period of time during which you would have to adjust mentally and emotionally while at the same time acquiring new skills.

I am not making any judgments, unlike others in this thread, on whether or not a person who is blind or Deaf (or deaf) should have a handicapped tag. I'm just pointing out that everyone is different and therefore everyone's needs are different. There ARE circumstances in which it is warranted. There is much more to losing one of your senses that most people are aware of.

I'd hate to come across you guys if I had any sort of a disability. Some of you in this thread are living proof of why this country needs a law to protect the rights of people with disabilities. IF people weren't so damn judgmental, we woudn't need laws like the ADA. I'd love to take some of you and put a blindfold on you for a day and see how you function for a day.

To make my opinion clear, no sticker/tag/plate/whatever...post-it.

Anyone else...I walk on by. There are too many awful reasons why people to have to apply for the sticker, I don't want to harrass them any further.

I also leave little notes to people for silly reasons too....like; um....I'll go to the Cafe before someone forwards this message for me!
