Question Front Loader washing machine??

OK...I'm in the market for a new washing machine, and would love to get a front loader. Truthfully don't know much about them...so I'm looking for some feedback if they are worth the $$ and what brands seem to be the best. Would love any info that anyone can give me in this area.
Thanks!!

I have had an LG set for about 2 years now. I LOVE THEM! I can't tell you how much water we saved. There are many cycles and such and they are easy to operate. I told my son that we would give him my set when he marrys and I am going to get a new set that has the steam cycle in dryer for quick wrinkle problems. Also, I am going to get a color next time to match my new wallpaper. I have white now which is beautiful.

The only down side is the detergent. It can be pricey, but I am using some of the stockpile 20+ bottles of Purex HE that I got about 6 months ago with a coupon/sale. It is great. It doesn't use much detergent, softener, bleach at all.

Hope this helps.

in our complex laundry room we have one of these. I do not know the name brand, but it holds a lot and it is great for washing rugs and other loads that normally have issues around the agitator. The directions say to use less regular detergent or HE detergent.

We love ours and got a set at home depot on clearance for around $900 total. Costco has a decent price on the HE detergent. Ours is stackable and we love that. I wouldn't ever go back to the other washers!

I have the Whirlpool Duet model with the pedestals. We love ours. You do need to keep the door and laundry dispenser drawer open and run a "cleaning cycle" monthly. I don't find the HE detergent any more expensive than the regular stuff.

As for price, we paid about $2,000 for our set plus the pedestals (they were $200 a piece). I like the way it looks and it does save water.

I have a 2 year old Kenmore He4t (similar to the Whirlpool Duet) and I love it. It gets most of the water out of the clothing so it takes a lot less time to dry (the drier is almost always done BEFORE the washing machine).

I can't comment on how much water is saves because I got it when we moved into our new house, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

Whatever you decide, be sure to use nothing except HE detergent (any brand you like is fine, as long as it is He). Otherwise the detergent makes too much suds which can damage the machine.

We just bought a set from Sears that are Kenmore He2plus King size capacity. I LOVE them! Our first full water bill dropped 11.00 in one month! They take less water, I can wash bigger loads(family of 4) and I truly feel my clothes are cleaner. I just wish I would have bought them sooner! Right now I enjoy doing laundry

Wow...from all the posts so far I'll definitely be getting a front loader. Anything that can save me $ especially these days is a good thing. I think my biggest question now is what brand and type is the best to get. Thank you everyone for all the information! Any other suggestions / reviews are greatly appreciated!

Watch out for repair costs down the road.

These machines are gadget prone and ultra expensive to fix. Check Consumer Reports for reliability.

Avoid Maytag - absolutely the worst for reliability.

I have the LG set and so far so good. got them at Best Buy and although they were pricey they threw in the pedestals to match a promo Lowes was having and they had a 2 year no interest payment plan. I pay about $17 a month interest free! Love the machines. I use a lot less water and detergent. Make sure you leave the washer door open after a wash or you get mildew (smelly) in the rubber gasket by the door. Also the spin cycle is so fast that the clothes are almost dry before you put them in the dryer saving on drying time as well.

That reminded me, when I washed my heavy quilt, I had the spin set on "HIGH/FAST". It threw the washer off balance. When you do something heavy like a quilt or rug, you need to turn the spin level a little lower.

I have had a Maytag Neptune for about 5 years and although it seems to clean fine, it has mold issues in the front seal. Someone told me about a seal kit to eliminate this problem and I called maytag who told me I have the newer version already. In addition, the normal cycle takes 48 minutes which is longer than any other washer that I have had. I would not recommend the Neptune!

I've had a front loader for quite a few years and LOVE it! It's a Kenmore and I got it for about $500 at the scratch and dent store. I use regular detergent, just very little - about a third of recommended - and that works well for us.

I have had the LG front loader washer and dryer for 2 years and LOVE IT! I bought it with the pedestals. The machines are also stackable. I am able to wash and dry queen size comforters without a problem. The HE detergents costs the same as regular detergents.

I'm glad regular detergent is working for you, but I would NOT recommend it. I tried that with my old HE machine and it flooded the motor with suds, resulting in a costly repair. The repair man told me it was directly related to using non-HE detergent. The HE is not much more expensive (same price, just less loads in the bottle) that the regular, and if you factor in the repair costs, the HE formula is a lot less expensive.

On the issue of the mildew smell around the seal, I personally have made it a habit to keep an old washrag/dishrag hanging on a hook by my washer that I take and wipe dry the rubber seal and under it by the filter area. I do this on my last load and then keep the door slightly open...it's such a habit to me and my family, so hopefully I won't have that issue.

I have had the LG's for 5 years (warranty was just up). And I love them. I want newer ones but DH said not as long as these are still working. We have not had any problems with ours. We did have the suds issue when I first got them but now I use the regular detergent I just use very little and it works well. As for the mildew smell the technician told me to just leave the door open after last load to let the seal dry. And ever since I have done that I have not had a problem. I love mine they hold alot and clean very well

Another vote for LG here. I've had it almost a year and love it, Read up at Consumer Reports first. Home Depot man told me he bought the same washer. It removes EVERY stain, including blood and dirt. Careful having them on a second floor though. Doc has one too and told a story about how his used to dance across the room.

bobswife90 is an unknown quantity at this point
I have had the Kenmore HE2plus. We use regular liquid detergent, but I use about half of what I would use in a top loader. I also add a little borax to boost the cleaning power and it seems to be working fine. One word of caution, don't let the load sit for very long or it will get mildew stinky quick!! I like the previous poster's idea about keeping a cloth to dry that seal because I get a bit of trapped water residue.

My only issue is the "spin dance" that my machine used to do. It seems dependent on your floor. In my old house, the machine (and pedestal) walked across the floor -- and they weren't off balance. In my new home, they seem to pretty much stay in place.
