Dumb question about butter

So...is the only difference between salted and unsalted butter that the unsalted has no salt?? (Told you it was a dumb question!!!) If that's the case though...then why in some recipes is salt added in? And if I use salted instead of unsalted, will it be too salty. Thanks for your help!!!

Yes, that's the only difference is salt.

What I've heard about recipes is that they want to control the amount of salt added. So they request unsalted butter, then add in what is required for the recipe. If you use salted butter, you don't control the total amount of salt in the recipe.

I think it probably depends on your personal taste if it's too salty. I've used salted butter when it called for unsalted and I could not tell a difference. But I know some people don't use much salt and it's possible they could tell a difference.

The other thing you could do is use salted butter, then slightly cut the amount you add in separately.

Thanks Lisa! I thought that was going to be the answer but I wanted to hear it from someone with more knowledge than I have.
