Shredded chicken sandwiches help needed please

i have to make shredded chicken sandwiches for a family get-together this week-end. I've eaten so many at graduation parties and most of them are pretty bland. Does anyone have a tried and true one that everyone loves? Appreciate your help!!!!

I have never heard of shredded chicken sandwiches. Maybe I call them something else. If you tell me what it is, I might have a recipe/

In Ohio they seem to be very popular. It seems everyone serves them at graduation or shower parties. They're just cooked shredded chicken breasts mixed with cream of chicken soup and then some people add bread crumbs or stuffing mix. Very simple but like I said sometimes they're pretty bland. I have had some very delicious ones and unfortunately didn't get the recipe. They're served on hamburger buns.

I use a can of Root's chicken (it's a local brand here, Ohio) and mix is with 1 can of cream of mushroom soup and 1 can of cream of chicken soup. I was talking to a friend who grew up in NH and she never heard of them either. They are SO good!

Ok here is my recipe for hot sandwiches they are really good. I use soy chicken being vegetarian but you can use regular chicken no problem! This makes 4-6 sandwiches depending on size of bread you use.
shredded cooked chicken-1-2 cups
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 10 slices thick bread(I use hoagie rolls)
1 tsp garlic salt 1 cup mayonnaise-NOT salad dressing 1-2 tomatoes sliced
You can also add red/green bell peppers sliced if you like them.
In small bowl mix chicken, 3/4 cup of the cheese, garlic salt and mayonnaise. Spread on bread. Top with tomato slices, sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cook on ungreased cookie sheet until toasted. 10-15 minutes bake time

Another ohio girl (we must be the only ones that makes this mess) see all above but my sister does use crushed crackers in hers.

shredded chicken sandwiches--yum

From Ohio also!
My Mother always added crushed saltine crackers. I think the salt added extra flavor, plus the crackers made it stretch farther when serving a crowd. They mush up, nobody knows they are even in there. If you add celery, chop it very very fine so it is undetectable, but adds flavor.

I do mine with bar-b-que sauce. I use a crock-pot and place a couple of boneless chicken breasts in with 2 sliced small onions and 1 sliced pepper or 2, then top it with about 1/3-1/2 bottle of bar-b-que sauce. If it seems a little too thick after it's been cooking a bit, I just add a splash of water. After the chicken is cooked and tender, I take out the breasts, shred them and put back into the crock pot. That way every bit of the chicken gets soaks up the sauce. I even add a splash of hot sauce to taste.

I do mine like rose13. THe Ohio version sounds, um, yucky. The thought of stretching chicken with crackers is unusual. Not for me.

Originally from Ohio, I thought this thread was funny. While living in Arizona I realized nobody there had even heard of shredded chicken sandwiches! In Ohio everybody has had shredded chicken. It's very common at church functions & auctions. Its often served when sloppy joes would be served. It does sound nasty, but it can be very good!

I boil a whole chicken, remove the skin & bones, shred and then mix with a bottle of BBQ sauce (or however much until it's the way I want). I don't add anything else. We like them on dinner rolls or buns - sometimes with pickles.

This is what I do. . .haven't tried it with the pepper though. In fact I just made this Thursday and it was gone by Friday. One of my kids fave.

They had these creamed chicken sandwiches at a graduation party we were at in Ohio last year. First I had ever heard of them.
In that town they are called creamed chicken instead of shredded chicken. (same recipe)

Sorry to say ~ but they looked gross to me! So I didn't eat any.

Our area makes a BBQ chicken sandwich.

lol - funny what we learn on here.... I'm from Texas and I've never heard of a shredded chicken sandwich either. The closest we come to that is a pulled pork sandwich and that's made with bbq sauce. Sounds interesting.....

good luck!!!

I add chopped red pepper and celery to add some flavor and texture. And nuts are delicious in it. Walnuts or pecans.
And I use Best Foods not bbq.

Is this served hot or cold?

It sounds like our chicken salad that is served cold. The shredded or creamed Chicken sandwich is served hot.

It's not Always BBQ...that is one variation. My dd requested Chicken "sloppy joes", which describes it I guess.......

I’ve never tried the sandwich but I found this site; 'The Unofficial Home of Shredded Chicken Sandwiches'.
It lists several recipes for them as well as the drive-ins/restaurants in Ohio where they are served.

Thanks Nightflier for the info. That explains it....these are mostly in southern Ohio. I'll have to ask BIL this weekend if he's heard of them.

I'm up near Sandusky and we eat them all the time. We have the Root's Factory here, which produces the best shredded chicken, imo. So, I don't think they are mainly in southern Ohio.
