Good Beginner SLR camera?

I am on the hunt for my first SLR camera and wondered if anyone had any good suggestions. I am just starting out, so I don't need anything too fancy. I was looking at possibly the Nikon D80 or the Canon Rebel series,

any opinions?

TIA!

First of all they don't make the D80 anymore. But I would highly suggest going to Ken Rockwell's site, just google it. He has a wealth of information on buying a SLR camera. I wish I would have known about this site before I bought my DSLR. HTH

I'm just learning mine, but I would suggest that you try out the camera before you buy it. Go into a store and pick it up and hold it to see how it feels. One might be a better fit for you.

DPReview Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ is a good website to check out reviews of different DSLR's.
You might want to keep in mind that camera bodies are usually the least expensive part of DSLR photography. Most only come with a kit lens that is a basic lens. Good but not great. And glass (lenses) is where the big bucks come into play.

Decide on if you want to go with Canon or Nikon first. The investment is in the lens, which fits one or the other, but not both. If you are starting and don't want to invest too much and decide on Nikon, I would suggest a Nikon D40 body off of Ebay and then a few very good lens choices.

Then, decide what sorts of photos you want to take. Kids moving fast? Indoor sports? Flowers? Vacation shots? Indoors/outdoors? I have a Nikon 18-200 VR that is $$$, but a great all around lens. The 18-70 is great if you don't need super zoom and much cheaper. You might want a 60mm macro if you like flowers and still close up shots.

There are a number of photography forums that may help you find your answer.

I have a canon powershot SX10. I believe it cost $350. Very good beginning camera..takes a few hours to figure out the settings. I ordered it off of Amazon. I am pleased.
