Walmart checkout procedure - your opinion

I was in walmart today and used the 20 items or less lane. I had a basket with 8 items in it. I took the basket and placed it on the small counter so she could take the items out scan them and bag them. This is the way I always do it. Then she told me that she would not take them out and I had to do it for her (come on its 8 items). I took the items out and then she proceded to have an atitude with me, she compared my basket to a shoping cart. I was wondering if I was wrong on not.

I have to admit, when I was a cashier, I was annoyed when people just plopped their basket down and didn't take the things out of it. (I guess the thought of "Come on, it's just 8 items" goes both ways.) I would have never said anything about it, though, and certainly wouldn't have made a customer take the things out. It was just a private grumbling in my mind.

I have to agree with Lorie, looking at it as a past cashier. I was also annoyed with that but never said anything either.

It would have annoyed me also, being a past cashier (most of my career days lol) And what also annoyed me(more) was when people just plopped their money on the counter instead of putting in my outstretched hand, the had their had out expecting me to put it nicely in theirs. HUH?

I remember the days when the cashiers use to remove all the items from the cart...... Personally I think the cashier was rude and I probably would have talked to the manager about her attitude.

I may have been put off by the cashiers comments, but personally I would not have expected someone to unlaod my groceries for me. I'm more than capable to do it. I usually try to put the basket back as well. I'm the one that got it and used it. Just my thoughts.........

Walmart is definitely not full service but she should have kept her mouth closed. The only store I go to that still provides full service is Harris Teeter. They open your cart and bag all your purchases for you and even offer to have someone assist you to your car.

As a customer, I admit I've been guilty of this. I didn't realize it might make the cashier annoyed. I just figured it was no more work for them to take it out of my basket as it was to take it off the belt. So, what's the problem; is it that cashiers see it as lazy on the part of the customer; or is it that it is more trouble for them?

I remember sometimes the baskets wouldn't always trigger the automatic belt to stop and the basket would get caught up in my cashier's terminal, so that was an annoyance if I wasn't quick enough to turn off the belt. It was also more of a strain on my hands and wrists to pick things up out of the baskets than to just slide them across the scanner from the belt. I'm sure some of my annoyance was also unfounded, though.

No such problem in our Wally. No baskets for years.

Our store has a new manager, and the store has courteous cashiers for the first time.

Hi. Used to come here years ago. I doubt anyone remembers me. Hope you don't mind me piping in. I think the whole basket thing probably happens a lot throughout the day, and I can imagine that could be very difficult on the left shoulder and trapezius muscle of the cashier over time. I do think she could have been more courteous.

Please take into consideration the extra height of the basket though it is not much, causes strain on the the position of the body. The reach of the cashier is truly limited. If the basket it right in front of the cashier not a problem but most of the belts are accessed from the right.
The money tossing and rolled up money are indeed another problem and if the changed was placed on the areas where people that are paying put it there would easily be concern for the customer.Money must be straightened to go into the register drawer and also blind customers fold money a certain way so that they know the amount of each billl in their wallet. Their money is always straight when they give it to you.
Cell phone use in stores should be banned in the checkout areas. Phone use in the store by cashiers are for conducting store business and not for pleasure.

I would never expect the cashier to unpack my basket and then have to put it away ( if it is on the belt, what would she do with it except have to find a place for it). So sorry... no sympathy here

I have not realized this is a problem. I also did not take into consideration that it's an extra strain on the cashier. I have always placed the basket on the belt and when I gave it a second thought I also thought "what's the difference between picking items off the belt and out of the basket?" Now I know. When you haven't experienced something sometimes it never crosses your mind.

As for putting the baskets somewhere there is usually a pile of them at the bag end of the register.
My friend is a cashier at WalMart I'm going to ask her this evening what her opinion is.

This is another reason I like these forums. I never would have thought of this had someone not brought it up.
