Where can I buy a "dog-proof" wastebasket?

I am so tired of picking up trash strewn across the kitchen floor by my two Boxers! They're fine when I'm in there but as soon as I turn my back they're fishing around in there. (Just like little kids, I swear!) Now my wastebasket is on my counter - which is not only gross but takes up a lot of counter space. Any suggestions fellow pet owners?

Re: Where can I buy a "dog-proof" wastebasket?

I purchased a wood enclosed trash bin holder at a craft show. It holds the standard kitchen sized can and has a door that is the whole front with a knob. it pulls forward and you toss in the trash, then back it goes and is completely enclosed. My garbage master bullmastiff no longer spends half the night sorting through the kitchen can! I can honestly say this is one of the best household purchases I have made in a long long time. I was just where you are, picking up trash 6 mornings out of 7 no matter what I did.

What doxielvr discribed is about the best solution, but if you can not find them or they are too much for you this paycheck, I found a rubbermaid bin that works. It is a taller one, about 2 ft. tall and is only about 10" wide. The container is clearish white and has a blue lid that snaps shut. I found it at Meijer's for $7.99. I now keep the garbage in one and their food in 2 others. Since the lid snapps shut, they can not easily remove the lid to scavenger. BUT, if they figure out they can chew threw the plastic, this won't work. The pup figured it out and started chewing on the lid. I put it ontop of their food bin and he left it alone. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my dog eating tissues from the bathroom wastebasket. I lucked out and found a small, plastic bullet-shaped garbage can at the dollar store; the kind that has a swinging lid. I know they have larger sized cans like that for the kitchen - maybe that would do the trick?

We have a metal step-can for our downstairs bathroom- the dog sniffs and goes away.

We keep our trash can in the pantry which the dog doesn't even bother with. Plus it is out of sight. We used to keep it under the sink but then we got a larger trash can b/c i was tired of taking it out every 2 seconds!

Re: Where can I buy a "dog-proof" wastebasket?

We bought a stainless steel with a foot pedal from Lowes. It was 60.00 but well worth it. We have a very nosy Labrador. Last summer she got a chicken bone out of our other trash can and it cost us a few hundred in vet bills (only to find out she was fine, and it would pass! LOL).

How funny...I was just thinking about this today. My puppy has been in the kitchen garbage lately, so my dh put a case of pop on the lid. LOL. She even grabs whole rolls of toilet paper and paper towels and drags them around. This is our first dog and it is alot of work. She gets into everything!

Re: Re: Where can I buy a "dog-proof" wastebasket?

Our lab used to love to dig in our trash. I asked the obedience instructor for advice, followed it and it did work. We put a mouse trap (upside down...the object is to scare, not hurt the dog) in the trash with a piece of newspaper over it. When the dog's nose bumps it, it "jumps" up in the trash. You can actually buy modified mouse traps at pet stores made for this purpose. On those, the metal trap part is replaced by something resembling a fly swatter so you get the movement and noise with less risk of accidentally injuring your pet. The traps also taught her to stay off the furniture.

Another way is to rig some empty soda cans with a handful of pennies (tape hole shut so coins don't fall out) so that when your dog tips in trash can, a bunch of cans fall down on him. The cans can also be launched towards the dog (object again is not to hit the dog but to create a loud, startling noice near it) when it is jumping, begging, or doing other undesirable stuff. You should try to launch the can without the dog seeing that it is you doing it according to our instructor.

Of course, if your dog isn't nervous about noise, neither of these will probably help. Good luck!

The swinging LID did the trick for us. It has kept 2 nosy Golden Retrievers out of the trash. Just a standard plastic can with a rounded top that has a swinging lid. Bought it so long ago that I don't recall where. Maybe Bed Bath & Beyond?

We have the swinging lid garbage can.

We also have a big dog that sticks her nose in the gc.

The swinging lid gc did not work for us.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I think the best way to go is either the one with the pedal or the enclosed version. Does anyone have a coupon? LOL

My German Shepherd Katie kept getting into the trash, so I invented the Doggy+Safe trash can. It is now available at Doggy+Safe | Dog Resistant Trash Cans | Dog Proof Trash Cans.

I bought this one from Lakeside Collections. It's 19.95 plus shipping. It's a big wooden trash can with a swing lid. (Actually made for outdoors). I love it and even DSs mastiff doesn't get into it!

Outdoor Garbage Can - The Lakeside Collection

ETA It comes unassembled with really clear instructions. It didn't take long at all to put together and I did it myself.
