Help!!!! I just did an online purchase for a new phone/service...what do I do about my old service? Do I need to end my contract with them or is that taken care of for you?

You need to noitfy your old carrier to cancel your service but wait until you get the new phone and are sure everything is working right.

I think it depends -- are you getting a number phone number, or 'porting' the one you already have? If you're 'porting', your old service will automatically be cancelled when the number is transferred. At least that his how it worked for me in August when I went from Cingular to Verizon and took my number with me.

One thing, however -- only the number you 'port' will be cancelled, so if you're on a family play or something, the other numbers will stay in service until you call and cancel them. Also, if you have a 'data plan', you will have to call and cancel it regardless if you port your number or not (or at least DH had to do that when he went from T-Mobile to Verizon earlier this year).

If you are still under contract you may be hit with a cancellation fee unless you had poor service or are moving to an area where the service is not sufficient. You should always check with your current carrier prior to switching to at least give them the option of price matching the equipment. I have had good luck with verizon in that respect. Coverage has gotten to be so nation-wide that it is difficult to drop a carrier for moving these days.
