cell phone for my teenager

Wondering if anyone has purchased a Disney Mobile Phone Family Package.
It has the GPS locator and 450 shared minutes for $59.99.
I have never owned a cell phone and am wondering what is a good deal for myself and my 13 year old daughter. I am also worried about the connection and want to make sure it is a good deal for the money - personally I think $60/month is high. What do you think? What do you use?

That is i high, but I guess your mainly paying for the GPS locator. T-mobile you can get 1000 minutes for that price plus unlimited t-mobile mobile to mobile.

My kids both had cell phones by the age 15..I wished I got them sooner. I have such peace of mind being able to reach them at any given moment. If I'm not mistaken some new cell phones have a GPS in them if something was ever to happen . I would assume the police would still be able to track them down.

I think its a great idea....especially if she's being given a little more freedom. My 10 yo dd has a cell phone.....now before you get your panties in a wad......it is for when she doing an after school activity or is out with her friends and their parents......heck this is sad but, the reason we bought it in the first place is she was going out of town with my MIL and FIL and we wanted to get in touch with her whenever we wanted. she gets homesick and MIL and FIL aren't exactly sensitive to that. DH and I will be getting her phone with the tracking when she has alot more freedom. We have cingular now and have had it for the past five years....before that it was bellsouth for a couple of years. I would love to know if this new technology works well.

DH and I have Virgin Mobile & highly recommend it. National coverage is wonderful; my in-laws have called us from their vacations in Puerto Rico and Hawaii with outstanding clarity. We buy top up cards @ Target when they are on sale. $20 of airtime can be purchased for $15. So, we have two phones, no contract and pay $10 a month for both. Great if you want it only for emergency purposes.

Best bet for a child is a prepaid so no ugly surprises when a bill comes.

For low use, Virgin Mobile is great. We love it.

I also use tracfone and haven't had any problems..I've had it for at least 4 years now. I don't use a lot of minutes so it works well for me..Tracfone does have frequent deals or coupon codes frequently out there too. I think I paid about $120 for 500 or so minutes, a phone and a years connection without having to purchase more minutes to keep it up..

DH and I have 1 Virgin Mobile phone that we share (although I have it with me way more than he has it).

Our son told us that when he was a "teen" he needed a cell phone. (He just turned 10 - he told us a couple years ago about the cell phone thing.)

We plan on getting him a Virgin Mobile phone when he starts middle school. I know he is a responsible child, and have no qualms about getting him a cell phone.

Read the Disney plan carefully. I think the GPS locator service costs extra or you pay each time you use it. From what I can remember when I looked into it, it was NOT included with the monthly service fee.

You would be better off getting a 'family plan' from one of the major carriers. If you're going to use the phones at all, this would be less expensive and less hassle than Trac Phone or something like that.

I would highly recommend Verizon -- we have had them for about a year now and have had no problems and very few dropped calls or bad connections. Their customer service has always been great. We had Cingular & T-Mobile before that and both were awful as far as dropped calls, bad connections and dead spots in our area (suburb of Atlanta, so not out in the 'boonies'). I also had lots of trouble with Cingular customer service.
