I hope this is the right board for this:

I am ISO a sewing machine. I have never sewed in my life! But my MIL has hinted around that she's tired of mending our stuff. So I guess I will have to learn to sew. Any suggestions on what type of machine, features, costs, etc. a completely inexperienced seamstress should be looking for? Also where can I find the best prices on machines? I saw some at Walmart but was scared to buy one since I know NOTHING about them. TIA for your help!

I would start with a machine that does'nt have a lot of fancy stitches. I love my basic machine, button holer, and only about 12 extra stitches. My Walmart carries Brother machines. They are very good. Also I would sign up for a beginner sewing class, if you get a portable machine you can bring it to class and they will teach you how to start out.
