Red face Crochet/kids Learning Hand Positions

HELLO,

I am 72 and am having a problem trying to show 8 yr. old great granddaughters how to hold their "fingers' with the yarn to control flow and regulate the chain. I am looking for pictures to instruct them, as we are frustrated today, tryng to wrap the yarn around fingers the way I have done it for 50years, but cannot teach them how!

I have looked at several sites for beginning crochet, but no pictures of how to hold the yarn. I don't even remember how I learned, or who taught me! I loop it around my pinkie and around the pointer and hold the chain under the hook with the thumb and middle finger, but there might be an easier way for kids. I am very fast at it, so I know this works, if I can just show them. Thanks for any help. Sylvia

My mom taught me, and also taught my daughter when she was about 7. I had also taught my son and he made a small blanket when he was around 8. It's great to have hobbies and to teach them to our children!

I saw this video on Youtube, maybe it can help....there were several to choose from on Youtube (look at the right side, it should list the others).

Red face Thank You !

What a wonderful video! So easy to follow her instructions. I even learned a new way to start my chain that was easier than I was doing it. Also, had forgotten how to start the granny square and that video followed the beginner one.

Thanks so much for your reply. Now I have to go buy new yarn as the girls have gotten me in the mood again and with a new one coming in Sept. I will have time to do a small blanket.

Sylvia
