Cutty Sark / Virginia Beach

I want to take my family to Virgina Beach this summer. We want to be walking distance to the beach. To be able to afford a week long stay, we will have to cook our own meals. I have been considering the Cutty Sark. Rates seem reasonable and they have kitchenettes. The reviews have really mixed. Some good and some down right terrible. I know it is older, and that is OK. We will be on the beach or just around. Does anyone that maybe lives there have an opinion? Is the something else walking distance to the beach that would fit our needs? THANKS! Darlene

I used to live at Va. Beach. Yes, there are alot of "hell holes" but there are alot of really nice, posh places too. Most of the bad ones are off the beachline. But the ones that are there to watch for are all the way at the end of the strip. The ones at the beginning and middle are usually pretty decent. Try searching ones that are "big name" and see of you can find ones that have online photos and tours. Try searching for review sites, too. People who have visited are usually brutally honest.

Oh yea and if you can, try to make your reservation for "off peak times" so that you aren't paying the tourist prices. In other words, try for either right b efore or right after summer.

I wasn't suggesting OP make reservations for December.

OP, can play around with the dates a little? Or are you set in a specific time frame? If you can then what I suggested will work. I have had plenty of experience with tourist season in the strip. The hotels/motels have too. If you can make your reservations for just a little before or after then, it will save you quite a bit of money and may even get you into a really nice place for about what you would pay for a "dive". You don't have to vary by much timewise. a week before or after as I said could save a lot of money.
