It is cheaper to stay in Maryland or Virginia. You can take the Metro into the Mall area. How long are you staying in DC? You just go to the FBI building in the Mall area. You might have to wait in a line but it is free. If you are coming in the summer it can be hot and humid esp. in August. So far it has been cool. 90's are the norm for summer. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them. I live in Maryland.

www.tripadvisor.com is not a bad site to check out hotel reviews.

The L'Enfant Plaza is to one side of the Mall area behind the Castle. But it is pricey. Maybe you can find a good rate one of the discount places. There are some hotels on Capital Hill but I am not sure of the price. If you find a hotel, just ask if they are in walking distance. Mall is filled with govt. buildings, monuments and the Smithsonian Museum which is 20 some buildings.

What ship are you going on for your cruise? We have taken 5 cruises with RCCL and 2 with Carnival.

We are thinking of going on the Freedom of the Seas maybe next April. Our last two and our upcoming cruise are all out of Baltimore. No flying, etc.

You should see Air and Space, Natural History and the monuments if you only have one day. You also wanted to see the White House and FBI. It could take you all day to see the things listed. There is a Hard Rock Cafe almost next to the Ford's Theatre. There are the typical fast food places but they are a street or two off the main streets. There are street vendors and food in all the museums. The food in the museums are more expensive.

We went on a Royal Carribbean cruise last March with our daughters who are teenagers. At the time they were 12 & 15. Basically, they will meet other teens at the pool and hang out with them most of the time! I think they have a curfew of 1AM? I can't remember the time for sure. We didn't let them stay out that late except the last night. They just hang out at the pool and walk around meeting other teens. You know your teens and if they are mature & responsible enough to be turned loose. Ours are and they met 3 sisters who were really nice as well. They also have a teen hangout thing where they can go after dinner, but my girls weren't interested in that.

The L'Enfant Plaza is really nice. Under the hotel, there is a small mall with a few stores. When you come out of the hotel, you turn right, cross the street at the light and you will be behind the Castle which is the original Smithsonian building. That is the closest hotel that I know. I have stayed in the hotel for events.

I can't help you with the teens and cruising. We started cruising a couple of years ago after our children were grown. Try joining cruise critic to find out more info about cruising.
