Restaurant Reviews from State to State

Hi Mycouponers!! I have been thinking that it would be a good idea to start a thread about places to eat in the different states. I know that when I travel I am always interested in finding a good place to eat, but it can can hard when you really don't have a clue as to where to go!! Please contribute your ideas for the state you live in or a place you really liked while traveling. Make sure it is obvious in your post what state you are talking about and a good description of the type of food and where to locate the restaurant! With your contributions this thread could be very helpful to a lot of us!!
Thank you!
Mcleader Julie

Mayville - The BEST restaurant imo is The Watermark, right on Chautauqua Lake. The food is incredible (I could have eaten my weight in their blue crab dip ). Serves lunch and dinner (casual family dining).

Jamestown - Local pizza - Lena's Pizza (2nd street) they have the best pizza AND the cheapest prices! If you're looking for a bar that has great food, then I'd say The Cherry Lounge. They have specials every night (Thursdays are wing nights, etc).

Falconer - THE BEST FISH FRY ever.......(really all of their food is yummo, and you get SO much food, their fish frys are famous, the fish hangs off both ends of the platter! ) is at The Belview East. Dh goes there so much for lunch that he even has a 'preferred customer' card!

Bemus Point - Fine dining would have to be The Hare 'n Hounds, on Chautauqua Lake. The food is pricey BUT it's well worth every penny.

Tony Packo's

If you ever visit the Toledo, Ohio area, Tony Packo's is a MUST! Hungarian-American food, tastilicious in it's own right, made even more famous by Toledo's own Jamie Farr. ("Corporal Max Klinger" on "M*A*S*H")

Devine Chicken Paprikas as well as world-famous hot-dog sauce. Signed "celebrity buns" line the walls make the restaurant even more delightful.

Visit from afar: Tony Packo's

Johnny Rockets

Like a step back into the 1950's Johnny Rockets menu and staff have that old-time charm. While the tables are a bit small, the food is delicious! Each table has it's own little juke box where you can choose songs (for a nickel!) while you eat. The malts and shakes are made the old fashioned way and if you prefer a soda, you can get "flavors" added to it!

Visit: Johnny Rockets

Fuddruckers

If you're looking for a burger that just might SCARE you before you eat it, Fuddy's is the place to go. Burgers ranging from 1/3 lb to a FULL lb (EEKS!) Build-your-own or oder a specialty, cooked to desired doneness. Complete with all kinds of delicions sides, drinks and yummy desserts, bring a HUGE appetite (or a lot of people) with you.

Visit: Fuddruckers

You could always check out chowhound.com for recommendations. For most of the larger boards you can do a search and find decent places in the area you're planning to visit.

Maine

Moody's Diner

It is located in Waldboro and I loved it. We went there several times. It is just good home cooking. The pies are to die for!
Moody's Diner, Waldoboro, Maine

Paige's Deli

It is located in Damariscotta. They have excellent sandwiches and it is a great place to grab sandwiches for a picnic.
Schooner's Landing
It is also located in Damariscotta. The seafood was fresh and simple and I thought it was pretty good.

Becky's Diner
We love Becky's Diner in Portland. You will find a lot of local people here. The breakfast is good and the fried haddock sandwich with tartar sauce is really good.

Flatbread Company ~ Portland

This is good pizza and well worth a stop.

Azure Cafe located in Freeport. We had excellent meals there this week. The food was fresh and good. I had fish and chips and my husband and linguine with shrimp. Give it a try! Good chowder too!

Center Cafe in Boothbay was good. We had haddock chowder and sandwiches. The food was fresh and well made

Portland: Old Port Sea Grill:
Excellent lobster roll. It was really the best I have had and the chowder was delicious. It is a nice place for lunch!

Good Times .. Burgers close to In 'N Out in CA. Frozen Custard like Foster's Freeze in CA...mmm

Fresh Fish Seafood Co .. FRESH, not frozen, $$$, but lots of great buffets through the seasons

Golden Corral - this is buffet, it's fresh, very generous, good steaks and tons of choices. Specials every night of the week.

Sweet Tomatoes - it's the same but called Soup Plantation in CA. S.P. was one of the dirtiest restaurants I ever ate at in Ca. Here, S. Tomatoes is ALWAYS clean, FRESH salad and soup bar, three freshly made pastas, foccacious, about six FRESH homemade soups made DAILY and lots of fresh breads, muffins, baked potatoes........... you cannot go wrong here!!

So. Cal:

Ruby's in Newport? Costa Mesa.. hole in the wall, hard to find. For like $6. you can get a prime rib meal including baked potatoes and salad.. yes, I said PRIME RIB AND SIX DOLLARS.. Only one night a week and the line IS LONG.

Original House of Pancakes.. I vouch for the Laguna Hills one. Ate there once a week, every week for 41 wks.. lol Every wk after my OB visit we went there.. mmm their apple pancake is enormous, takes up a dinner plate and is about six inches high!! Enough for at least two people.. AT LEAST

When Seafood Broiler left decades ago, I was so bummed. Then I found out the original and only Crab Cooker in Newport had the same owner.. I LIVED for mesquite cooked scallop and shrimp skewers there.. mmm

Saw this posted at Oprah.com for Washington, DC:
Washington, D.C.: Tabaq Bistro
1336 U St., N.W.; 202-265-0965

Conservative isn't a word that applies to our capital's vigorous restaurant scene. Chefs here began turning out eclectic, ingredient-centered cuisine in the Clinton days, and the evolution of D.C. dining continues full blast. While restaurant interiors take their cue from Manhattan, the food brings to the city flavors from around the world.

Few D.C. restaurants have such stunning views as Tabaq Bistro's glassed-in rooftop terrace. Reserve well ahead or settle for the lower-floor dining room; either way, you'll find a selection of more than 40 tapas plates, incorporating Mediterranean flavors from Morocco to Turkey. Be warned: The dress code forbids sneakers. Dinner for two, $80.

I think you are thinking of Zubies in Costa Mesa ? Ruby's is a chain, 50's style diner, burgers & shakes, good food, great breakfast. We have one at the end of our pier.
I'm sad to say Zubies is no longer there

I'll come back soon and post some good places here in Orange County CA.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA

When I get company they always want to try a Mexican Restaurant. They are always disappointed with real Mexican food. There is a chain of Mexican restaurants ( for American tastes ) that have really good food. One is "Acalpulco Mexican Restaurant", they have great Margaritas, appetizers, desserts, and the food is good also.

Southwestern: "El Torito Grill" is fantastic, you can watch them make their tortillas, they come hot to the table with fresh made salsas & honey butter ( you spread a tiny bit of the butter on the tortillas, then add salsa roll and eat ) . Margaritas are great, food is very good. This is what most of the people I know think Mexican is.
Don't confuse it with El Torito Mexican Restaurant, it good but it's Mexican.

We have a lot of chain restaurants here that are very good.

"Claim Jumper" is the #1 money maker in CA. They have a little bit of everything, Super Large portions, food is really good.

"Souplantation" is a large salad bar, soup bar, pasta bar, bread/pizza/muffin bar, potato bar, yogurt/dessert bar place. Good food.

"Cheesecake Factory" good food, Wonderful cheesecakes.
"California Pizza Kitchen" has more than pizza, pasta, salads.
"Corner Bakery" panini sandwiches, salads.
"Ruby's Burger chain, good food, good breakfasts.
"Marie Callenders" Started out as a pie shop. Pies are Wonderful ! Food is good.
"Rainforest Cafe" will make the kids happy.
"P.F.Chang's China Bistro. Good, lot's of garlic, not cheap.
"The Old Spaghetti Factory" not as cheap as it use to be, but still a good deal. Food is very good. Opens at 5PM.

"Mimi's Cafe" French bistro. Best Breakfast ! Carrot bread is fantastic, yummy muffins, good lunch.

"Islands" Best Burgers !Gourmet Burgers, they are 1/2 lb. and Fantastic. They also have good salads, taco etc. Fries come in a big basket, not frozen, Nachos. Large Portions.

Not a Chain. The best Seafood around is in Los Alamitos " The Original Fish CO " there's a wait and lunch is much cheaper than dinner. Sour dough rolls are to-die-for. New England clam chowder isn't really authentic, they put lots of celery in it, But it is the BEST I've ever tasted.

If you are ever in Huntington Beach ( Beach Blvd & Atlanta, near the beach ) we have a small Mexican Restaurant nearby, take out, small dining area, called " Las Barcas " they use only canola oil, top quality lean chicken & beef, they make their own salsa, prices are good. Food is Wonderful !

For real family style Mexican you can try " La Capilla Mexican Restaurant " on Adams at Beach Blvd. my favorite is the Chili rellinos, DH always gets the chicken Fajitas. LOL !

Fast Food Chains here besides McD's are Carl's JR ( good chicken sandwiches ) Wienerschnitzel (lots of different kinds of hotdogs) burgers.

Well that's all I can think of for now. I hope this helps.

If you are looking for Mexican food Super Mex is great. It's a small chain. It's about 4 miles north of Disney on Habor Blvd. In Fullerton.

If you are looking for Italian-Angelo's and Vinci's. This is a definate MUST if you are visiting the area. We always take our out of towners here. They have a website. Great pizza too (we had it for dinner tonight!)

Fast food mexican-Molcasalsa small chain. The one in Fullerton is good.

I am surprised and saddened to say that a lot of the restaurants on this list are chains...I thought this list was so that we could figure out new places to go to in different parts of the country -- ones that make them unique. I guess I was wrong.

Oh, and the Corner Bakery in the building I work in (in Illinois) was closed this week due to health code violations -- EEK!

I think the reason a lot of posted restaurants are chains is because that is where a lot of people end up eating at. Chains also differ from state to state!! If you are looking for a particular type of food in a certain state I would do a search on google. Just type in something like Italian food+reviews+georgia....
We would be happy for you to post some of your non-chain restaurants for the states that you are familiar with.

In Whittier, CA

Seafare Inn on Whittier Blvd. owned by the Milhaus family
Seafare Inn Restaurant

family owned and a favorite in this area
My favorite is the Broiled Shellfish Kabob which is lobster, shrimp & scallops
Their is the red Manhattan style which is a rarity in this part of the country

Although the menu states that salad comes with your entree, you can request the chowder instead.

La Habra, CA

Golden Star on Whittier Blvd. Just West of Euclid
This is a small Chinese Restaurant and also family owned. Their food is always delicious and the service is excellent. But nothing fancy. Just wholesomely good food.

Buena Park, CA
Knotts Berry Farm Chicken House
Many of you have probably heard of Knotts Berry Farm. Well, this is an amusement park Restaurant that is not just a tourist trap.

And for senior citizens, behind the Chicken House only on Tuesdays between 3:00 - 6:00 is a buffet chicken dinner for $9.00. You get the same food from the same kitchen as the Chicken House, only much more of it and much less expensive. Drinks and Boysenberry or Apple Pie (or both) are included in the price

You can go to either of these restaurants without actually going into the park, therefore no admission cost.

Hi! Just checking to see the pricing on the chinese menu?? I know that dine in is pricey sometimes and think that it would be nice to go to dine in once in a while!! We are in Fullerton so it is not much of a drive!
