ideas for travelling with disabled

My husband has MS and for the most part is in a wheelchair. I would love to take him somewhere when I get my vacation in a couple of months. He is unable to ride in a car for long distances so it would have to be close (NW Indiana). We live pay check to pay check so cost is another consideration. I would love to get a cabin for a few days but I don't want him stuck inside the cabin the whole time. Any suggestions from anyone who has done this before? Thanks!

Chey

cabins for rent in Indiana can be really expensive. We can do a week at Disney for what a cabin rental in Indiana is.

How far do you live from Indy? Would that be something you could do? We have found that if we get a 3* room from priceline and try to stay in north indy to avoid the parking fees you pay for downtown, we can usually get a really nice place in the $40 a night range. You can also get good buys on restaurant gift cards from restaurant.com and check around for discounts to the zoo and museums and we can do a really nice getaway for very little money.

Have you done Amish Acres? They offer packages that are really reasonable as does bearcreek farms which is over by ft wayne. The kids don't enjoy the trips, but if you are looking for some place that is more for a cheap getaway these are great places to go.

I don't have any experience travelling with a wheelchair, but I'll bet that the city of Chicago is up to date on ADA regulations and manuveurable with a wheelchair . Would a few days at a hotel in the city be within your budget? Visit the museums and such, maybe a ball game.

My dad is disabled and we find the best vacations for him are cruise ships. He can go almost anywhere on the ship and there are lots of things to do. He gets off at most ports and scoots around. They seem to cater to older folks with disabilities.
