NYC.... with an ALMOST adult ;)

Tradition.... started out with each of my children that the first time they were "allowed" to do a NYC trip was when they turned 11. It has worked out GREAT! 2 of my 4 have passed the mark, enjoyed the trip and are telling the second two all about it....

So now, I'm ready again, and my oldest is 18. New tradition! 2nd trip will be at 18....

Yes, it's a different trip than the 11th.

Tell me how, tell me what you would do, where you would go, what you would see...

Not that they have super clear memories of the first trip. We did a show, we did the ESB, TOTR, SOL, CP, WTC, (one before, one after) so we could and WILL touch on those again, but now, I have an 18 yr old son... he's ready for pre-adult stuff... I need recommendations!

One of his requests is to just hang, walk around, shop, see.... I can do that... one of my requests is a show, something Broadway, something memorable, something lasting... we both agree we want to do what the other wants.

Specifically interested in... shows, comedy, off or on broadway..... restaurants, clubs ??? shopping..... things that an 18 yr old would remember, appreciate, enjoy

Give me some ideas ....

TIA!

Perhaps you should let him plan part of the trip! I am sure he knows how to use the internet. He might find things you would not. Travel Guides, Hotel Reviews, Photos, Forums, Deals - VirtualTourist.com is a good one to look at.

Well it all depends on his interests and the time of year.

Circle Line has a fun fast boat around Manhattan, my dd liked it and took some of her friends when they were 17-18.
Circle Line New York around Manhattan sightseeing tours

You can get "student rush" tickets that are generally around $25 if you show student id's (and usually you can get 2 tickets).
This is a message board where they discuss which shows give this:
All That Chat

I love street fairs! They are free, they close the entire street for several blocks and are filled with ethnic things for sale and lots of fun foods to eat. They are so much fun and a real taste of NYC. For a listing:
SCHEDULE New York City Street Fairs and Festivals
here is another link, sometimes they don't list all on each site:

If he is going this summer, Bryant Park offers free Broadway concert snippets:

John's Pizzaria in Times Square is fun to eat (it is located inside a converted church with a giant stained glass ceiling).

But if he is going in the winter, there is inexpensive skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park, or Bryant Park is even cheaper, and way cheaper than Rockefeller Plaza.

Down by WTC if you continue down you can take the Staten Island Ferry for free.
"From the deck of the ferry you will have a perfect view of The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You'll see the skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan receding as you pull away and coming into focus again as you return."
I took teens on that and it was a nice cheap and fun ride and we rode back and then continued on with other sites in the city.

Then there is the fun of chinatown. I just love walking around and checking out the interesting shops.

There is a section of the village that is Japanese. Both my dd and ds went to Japan and loved going here where almost everyone speaks Japanese and they loved the shops and the restaurants.

Then there are museums.

It is hard to suggest if I don't know your son's interests.

If he is into sports, you could always catch a game at Madison Square Garden or check out the giant Nike store uptown.

There is always Lincoln Center. In the summer they have a open air free concert series and in the Spring/Summer they have free dancing. My dd and her friends used to go for free Swingdancing.

If you post some of his interests, I could suggest some other options.

Thanx all, Rose, expecially, GREAT links, I've save....

One of the things he wants to do is see a comedian somewhere...we'd really like to see SNL, though tix must be requested in Aug... we may just do standby and hope for the best.
Another thing.... anyone know anything about getting a tatoo in NYC?

TIA again!

We went to Gotham Comedy Club and saw Todd Barry. I didn't know anything about him when I bought tickets. I just looked at who would be there while we were in town, googled their names and checked out stuff about them. We had a great time. However, I think you have to to be legal drinking age.
